Java question: I need help with a modal window.

If I have a modal window with a Jcombobox near the bottom of it, I can't use my mouse to click on the regions of the popup menu (from combobox) if it extends beyond the modal window area. The problem is that the popup menu from the Jcombobox extends outside the modal window. Therefore I can't select any of the options on the menu that are outside the window. How do I get around this? Aside from moving the comboBox to the top of the window, or making the window not modal.
