Whenever I open a java applet (or perhaps it's specific to the site: Yahoo! games.), the entire screen goes black and then reappears again (some portions are not redrawn and still appear black).

Anyone know what's wrong here, or how to fix it?

Are there any output from the Java console and which version of JVM are you using?

Settings -> Control Panel -> Java -> Advanced -> Java Console

That's for 1.5. Should be around the same for 1.4.2.

Or from IE:

Tools -> Sun Java Console

Simply opening the java console itself caused the problem. In fact, it caused my machine to crash (after I had opened another applet previously..).

this is all the console said:

Java(TM) Plug-in: Version 1.4.2_05
Using JRE version 1.4.2_05 Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM
User home directory = C:\Documents and Settings\[removed for privacy]

Proxy Configuration: No proxy

----------------------------------------------------
c: clear console window
f: finalize objects on finalization queue
g: garbage collect
h: display this help message
l: dump classloader list
m: print memory usage
o: trigger logging
p: reload proxy configuration
q: hide console
r: reload policy configuration
s: dump system properties
t: dump thread list
v: dump thread stack
x: clear classloader cache
0-5: set trace level to <n>

Have you updated your video card drivers as well as removing Java? I'd start checking every driver in the system for updated versions.

Java was working before with my present video drivers, I doubt that's the issue. Only things I can think of are that I:
- Upgraded Firefox
- Installed AOHell trial (they gave me 20 bucks for signing up for a free trial.. I couldn't refuse!)
- Installed VS.net

I don't think it's Firefox nor VS.net as I have both of them installed on my PC and it works fine. Try removing the AOL stuff you installed.
