java problem ?

absolute windows novice here.

java problem: with some sites, i click to load a java applet (or what i think is a java applet 😱), and
nothing happens.

when a page with java loads, i get a small message in the left hand corner of the internet explorer saying 'done, but with error'.

for example. i play scrabble on playsite.com

somehow i'm able to log in. click to the page where you can select the level of play, but the board itself wont load. nothing
happens when i click on, for example, beginners table.

i loaded the latest java runtime environment. it didn't help.

but i'm wondering if there is any way i can diagnose and solve the problem myself.

any progs, sites, etc (here maybe 😀) ?

When you downloaded the Java runtime enviroment did you set it to be the default java handler in IE or did you just install it?

Just installing it might not fix the problem. Go into IE then click Tools -> Internet Options -> Advanced and search for the check box that says to use the java plug in (or runtime enviroment) to handle java.

thanks for the reply.

the java runtime environment required a 'puter reboot. i looked under tools and the check was already there.

still, the problem persists.

i'm amazed that i can work through anandtech forums without a problem, but then i go to other sites that i
have been visiting for months and nothing works the same. 😕

I had a problem with Windows XP and Java websites. I found the solution at http://www.anti-leech.com/java_jvmguide.php
thanks for the idea.

i tried your recommendation on my win98 sys but no soup for me.

unclicked sun java under ie5.0 tools. installed ms java. now i have 3 versions of java installed, with the ms one operating now.

i also tried the repair feature on internet explorer, returned everything to original settings, task scheduler and all, and still nothing.

who knew there were 2 versions of java ? i thought java was always sun java. :frown:

Surprised the fix did not help. Why don't you try upgrading to Internet Explorer v6.0 and see if that fixes the problem. Provided you have a Pentium III or better it should work fine and fixes some of the bugs in earlier versions. Uninstall previous versions first.

Hope this helps!
That "fix" is a complete crock. MS VM is an antiquated Java 1.1.4 JVM with some extra hooks, and some features missing (namely standard RMI and JNI). If an application requires MS VM, then it's not a standard Java application, plain and simple.

While the MS VM is somewhat of a de facto standard Java applet VM, the Sun Java2 VM is clearly the de facto standard JVM. For the vast majority of users, I recommend the Sun Java2 1.4.x VM. The main drawback of the Sun JVM is a long start-up time, which occurs only once for the first applet loaded.

i have a pentium II, 450mhz, 128mb ram.

system specs are adequate for sun java runtime. the fact is the java is fickle. i pick java sites at random. some report
errors, some don't. the playsite.com site, which i had been visiting for months without error, suddenly stops functioning.
the game tables wont load.

a random example would be thesource.com - i jump onto title page but get no further.

anandtech works ! what gives ?
