java n00b question: raising to power?

How do you raise X to the power of Y? And what the hell does "^" do? Naturally, I thought the operator was "^", but that gives me weird results (10^1 = 11, 10^2 = 8).

I believe ^ is xor in java. I think you want Math.Pow()
