I would like to be able to access maps of my city in my cell phone. The thing is, I don't have a data plan, so if I used something like google maps I would get horrendus data charges.

I would would like to have some kind of solution where all the maps of my city are stored in my phone, so it would not have to access the internet. Anyone know of a way I can do this? I have a Motorola V360 and it supports Java.

This is a really terrific idea actually. I never even thought of it before. Worse comes to worse, you could scan in map images from a real map...

Can't you just store a huge JPG map of your city on the memory card? Most phones with media apps allow you to pan and zoom a picture.

I could, but it would be nice to have seperate jpgs for each level of zoom like in google maps, so I could read the street names at any zoom level, and have the app automatically switch between the jpgs while zooming.

Well as I see it you have two choices:

1 - Keep five huge JPGs of the relevant zoom levels

2 - Spring for an unlimited data plan and use GM.

GPS mapping proggrams like iguidance and tomtom keep your maps on a memory card and dont use data (except for optional traffic updates). I dont know if either has a java version, but both have windows mobile, and tomtom has symbian (nokia).
