JAVA is it necessary ?

Our IT department here at work is saying that they are contemplating either not installing any future updates to the JAVA on our network workstation or possibly removing JAVA altogether !!!

Is this something that they should really consider doing ? Isn't JAVA a necessary addin to the IE browser ?

Lots of sites use java. If you don't visit any of those sites then it's not a problem.

I'm pretty sure Webex is java-based, so that wouldn't bode well for a lot of web conferences.

What do you mean by "the JAVA on our network"? Java is a language runtime environment installed per machine. Perhaps they're just talking about a machine running JavaServerPages?

Yes, I believe I said network workstation. I probably should have made that plural, workstations.

If they're worried about the security aspect, not installing updates doesn't sound like a solution.
 
The Java plug-in is only necessary if your user community needs to use applications that require it. Without knowing anything about your business and the applications you use, we cannot answer this question for you.
 
I hate (well OK, dislike) Java. It's slow, and seems quite buggy at times.

Our new HP switching equipment requires Java when managing the switches in a web browser. I know some guys are die-hard CLI but I like how the GUI gives you an intuitive view of the port statuses, etc.
 
Since we don't really use too many java apps or anything like that, i'm going to start to not include it in the default system images. I didn't use it at home so i uninstalled it a long time ago and haven't really had a use for it since.
 
I wish we didn't use Java, but Oracle and Discoverer require it and Oracle, or the customized version of it, is buggy and unstable. 🙁

Hey, that "so called" buggy and unstable version of Oracle keeps me employed. :biggrin: It is nice that Oracle is using the standard Sun JRE now and not a customized version. Guess it makes sense since they swallowed up Sun 🙂
