I need help putting together a build. I've been out of the hardware game for like seven years, so please go easy on me.
I want to put together a machine for java development, under ubuntu. It will be running stuff like eclipse/myeclipse, mysql, multiple jboss instances, and possibly some vm's. I haven't decided on that last part yet. There may also be some media serving and/or transcoding action going on as well. There will be no gaming, so integrated graphics should be fine.
I've decided to go with a Phenom II x4 965. Not so much because of balls-to-the-wall cpu performance, but more for the core to price ratio. Plus, it should be plenty fast for the few times that cpu cycles are demanded. Let's face it - the majority of the time will be spent in a text editor wait state.
I don't have a strict budget, but I plan on ~$600 for everything but the display: cpu, ram, mobo, case, storage.
For the motherboard, one person in another thread suggested the ASUS M4A88T-V (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...&SID=u00000687). That seems adequate. Another person suggested an 890FX based board for virtualization, but I have not yet decided if that's a high priority.
4gb of ram should be enough at first. Ram speed doesn't really matter.
Storage requirements are modest. I've got a NAS for anything I need to store long term. So I could go with a cheapo energy efficient drive, or possibly a ~60gb SSD. Or both?
For the case, I don't need anything with major room. Just space for possibly two devices(hd+ssd?) and an optical drive, plus maybe a card-reader if I choose. I also don't plan on any over-the-top overclocking at the moment, or demanding video, so I don't need a monster power supply either.
The only "feature" that I might seriously consider would be a video card for multiple monitor support.
Help will be appreciated
