Java and Active X not working in IE 7.0

I view a lot of java applets and Active X applets for my math courses and since I upgraded to IE 7.0 all I get is a little red X in the top left of the applets. So I have to use the slower (imo) firefox.

I have tried setting the security to it's lowest setting, altering all the advanced settings to enable active X and Java.

Also, when the prompt comes up "Do you want to install ActiveX" I click "install" and it still doesn't work. Oddly it asks me install active X every time I come to an active x page. For Java it doesn't even give me any prompt. I have java on my computer because it runs in firefox, but for whatever reason it doesn't run in IE 7.0.

Thanks for any suggestions!
