You mean alternatives to the JRE? There was the Microsoft VM, but that was abandoned due to legal actions from Sun. IBM had one as well, but that is only for select IBM users.

If you are talking about programming languages, J# is similar to Java in syntax and uses the .NET framework.

Yes. Sucks that there is no other options now except the sun java. Its so bloated, slow, and has so many security flaws.

Care to elaborate? Version 6 of the VM loads fast even on older machines, and what few security flaws pop up are usually resolved fairly quickly.

There are a number of alternative runtimes, but they're not available for free. BEA's JRockit and IBM's JRE are both targeted as server runtimes, which is really Java's bread and butter platform.
