Jaton Geforce2 MX 32mb - any good? worth $84?

Hey all, need your opinion cause I couldn't find a review for the Jaton version of the Geforce2 MX. I am building a computer for my friend and want to get him a MX, of course money is a big part of it and he doesn't care about 2% speed increases if he can save $20. I found this gfx card at microbarn where I will be getting a MSI Pro2a mobo for him (same as mine) and a few other things.

Is this Jaton worth getting or complete crap? If I dont get him an MX I'd probably just get him a TNT2 vanta. I have a Elsa tnt2 vanta in my second computer and it runs pretty well.

Well anyways, please let me know what you think.

Save yourself the pain. Jaton is horrible company. Spare yourself!

Why bother with it anyways? Go to www.mwave.com (very trust worthy retailer) and pick up a Gigabyte Geforce 2 MX 32meg for $89.00 with reasonable shipping prices. It will probably be cheaper than Microbarn in the end.

if you really want to save money , get the epox 8kta+ instead of the msi which is about $20 less (the ata 100 on the k7tpro2a is slower than the ata 66 on the epox , toms hardware said the 686b south bridge is buggy), and get a radeon LE from newegg for $86 shipped.

Thanks for the opinions, but I have a MSI Pro2a for my computer as well and it runs great. No DIP switches to fool around with, everything is in the bios making it easy to overclock the fsb or multiplier. It is true that the 686B was buggy, but I've been using via's 4-in-1 4.28 for a while and it has specific drivers for win2k. Also MSI is really good with BIOS updates and fixes.

I ended up buying the Jaton gfx card, and will test it out. He isn't going to overclock it or anything. If its terrible I'll return it and get a Gigabyte or something, but this way I'm saving about $20 because I'm not going through another company (w/ extra shipping charges)

vanta decent? man, i had one it would barely run games... even my g200 was better... no wonder i was able to get for 10 bucks...
the jaton can't be much different (unless they use slower ram like visiontek, check the ram clock) its not like u need to use jaton drivers or anything

if i were you, i would spend a little extra cash and get the leadtek geforce2 mx. mwave.com has it for $119 plus shipping, buy IMHO its the best mx. I've personally seen it run 225/225 stable with no problems at all, and i know it can even go higher than that.

just my $.02

I really appreciate all the opinions from everyone.

Dave127, if I were buying the card for myself I'd probably get that one, but my friend isn't a computer buff. He just wants a budget machine and doesn't really care about overclocking. He says "as long as I can play those games you play". I was trying to get him to buy the same geforce 2 gts 32mb ddr one i got but he didn't want to spend $150. I ended up building his whole system w/ 17" monitor for under $750. It beats any thing at bestbuy, gateway, dell.
