Jasper XBox 360... Loud...

Is it me, or is the fan loud.. and a lot more high-pitched. Hell my HTPC with 3x 80mm fans sounds quieter. My PS3 (Launch 90nm) also sounds quieter. I thought the new XBox was supposed to be quieter? Or was it just quieter relative to the old one?

My jasper is as quite as my PS3, which seems to always run the fans in "jet engine" mode now. The DVD drive is quieter but still the loudest component in the console.

I don't recall Microsoft ever mentioning Jasper would be quieter. Or mentioning Jasper at all. There were some extremely vocal advocates of "waiting for Jasper" proclaiming it would be quieter, with absolutely zero evidence to support the claims.

I just replaced a Xenon 360 with a newer Jasper one and it is quite a bit quieter.
I can't say how much quieter than one of the newer revisions it would be though.

The dvd drive seems incredibly loud, but I have no reference for it other than my ps3. Running games off the hdd though makes things ALOT quieter.

Ah, ok. But though, to be honest, maybe loud isn't the best word.. it is extremely high-pitched in terms of fan noise, and that annoys the heck out of me. This was with no game in the drive. So it definitely wasn't the DVD-ROM.

There's always variation. MS uses different branded fans and DVD-ROMs. I imagine some Jaspers are pretty quiet and others are loud. Looks like you got a loud one.

They said the same thing about Falcons. Some were quieter than others. I luckily got a reasonable sounding one.

And yeah, high pitched fan noise sucks 🙁. It's probably some fault of the fan though. You can try to replace it, just look for a 360 with a different build date and "team."

With a good design running cooler should mean running quieter, since less heat to exhaust means similar-quality fans can run at a lower RPM.

So it's logical (and there is evidence) to claim that Jasper could be quieter than Falcon, which could be quieter than Zephyr.

Unfortunately, as with Falcon units MS seems to use a mix of different fans, some quiet and some loud and whiny. So while Jasper could be more reliable and more quiet than Falcon it "sounds" like MS doesn't want to spend the extra nickel to always buy quiet fans.

At least they fixed the DVD-ROM noise problem by letting you run from the HD.

It's good that you're using the "could" word now, but I recall a fair number of folks saying "would". Hence the misunderstanding that OP is having.

I'm pretty sure I've always used "could" or "hopefully" weasel words in describing the possible benefits of Jasper, since MS used a mix of good and bad fans for Falcon too 🙂

I've also said "should be" more reliable. Reducing the crippling warranty costs makes as much sense as reducing manufacturing cost, but they could still have cut enough corners to make a new lemon.

Different companies are constantly bidding for business with MS when it comes to things like the DVD drives and fans. My 60gb Falcon is very quiet and my friend's new Jasper arcade (which to its credit is cooler) is louder. I'm not going to nose around the back of his entertainment hutch but I just assume that he has different fans.
