Jason.... are you a robot?

About a month ago I got a call during work from a telemarketer named Jason. I normally don't have much patient for calls like this, but within a few seconds this guy had me persuaded to stick around for "two minutes of my time". I hesitantly agreed and listened to his pitch (while timing him - he nailed 2 minutes on the dot), and it turned out that he just wanted to send me a couple free movies and get feedback. I figured that the worst would maybe be some spam in the mail, so I agreed.

We got the movies... They weren't exactly appropriate for 23 year olds... and Jason had promised me we would enjoy them. Too bad for us, "No More Baths!" wasn't on our blockbuster queue... it was rated for 4-6 year olds.

Last night I got another call, definitely from the same guy. I noticed the same thing that I had picked up on the first time... This guy sounded so fluid and rehearsed... It truly seemed like a soundboard or something, but he was saying my name and answering questions with no down time. I finally picked up on it when I interrupted him and heard his audio clip get sheered off mid-speech. There was a moment of silence, and I asked him, "Jason.... are you a robot?". After a few seconds of silence he began to inform me that he indeed was a live salesman, but was using a text-to-speech converter.

This was just amazing to me. We had a five minute conversation, and the thin is just flawless. He must have had 5 replies for the word "yes", including "uh-huh", "yeah", "yep!", etc. Eventually Jason (if thats even his name) got bored and went back into his pitch... I cut him off again, so he told me he had to go.

I think I'm gonna miss him.

This is what I do (yes I am already registered for the do not call list)

I pick up the phone and say nothing. If there is a live human on the other end, they would say hello. If it is a computer, it is waiting to hear someone say something before hooking you to one of the agents. If I don't hear anything in 4 seconds, I just hang up.

I followed a similar policy when I still had a land line.

I don't really need the landline but I am willing to pay for the security of having the line work even if I have no power/internet.

Well, technically I do have a landline, it came with my DSL, I can receive calls, but outgoing calls are ten cents per minute. I don't even know the phone number and I'm not sure where my plain old phone is :p

Sorry you didn't enjoy your movies. Would you like High School Musical 1 and 2 instead?
