Never been there but they tell me it's nice. Life's been good to me so far.
I was actually in West VA on a work assignment. Some of us went out to pick up BBQ off the main road. I was made to feel unwelcome. I was stared at like I was going to behave like the images those people see on Fox News.

So much for your small town

Different strokes for different folks.

New York is where some like to stay, they get allergic smelling hay, they really enjoy a penthouse view, they want Park Avenue.

Others enjoy fresh air, low pollution and few annoying people. Plus the chores outdoors are all they need.

You are obviously a city slicker.
Well I go backpacking and camping so no I personally am not a city slicker, though I much prefer to live urban, and spend time in rural when I want to. But I am not talking at all about ones proclivities about the lifestyle choices one wants - whether that be more urban or more outdoorsy. If being in nature and taking care of a house and being more introverted is your thing, I am not judging. This is not what I am talking about.

I am talking purely about voting per capita. If you enjoy small town living, I'm all for it. I see the downsides of city living as well. As far as rural vs urban, I've long been for using the resources of America to help all Americans, and that included subsidizing the small town and rural lifestyles. I remember when Obama started an initiative to get more broadband to rural areas, I was all for it, even though I knew it was a straight redistribution of wealth, to me that is the point! That is the kind of united leadership we need! I have been changing my mind on that though since Trump. After decades of supporting the redistribution of wealth from more populated areas to less populated areas, after seeing the voting coming out of the less populated areas for someone as obviously as horrific as Trump and the current GQP, I think we are wasting resources and should cut down on it. We need to cut our losses. Decades of Dems trying to help rural areas economically has backfired, they hate us, they like Trump, the battle lines have been drawn.

But regardless.

Simple facts. in urban centers, per capita, less people vote for shite like Trump and the worst of the GQP whereas in small towns the numbers are reversed, per capita, more people vote for the worst of our politicians. That's it. I'm not talking if you like living a more quiet life or being in the thick of things.

You don't get out much I assume. You should visit a small town and enjoy the refreshing hospitality and not worry if someone is going to mug you 10 feet from your door step.

And yes I was obviously kidding. My small town of 1M is one of the largest in Texas. But the burbs are smallish.
Whether city slickers or bumpkins, hospitality is not a trait I associate with Texans.

If you think people living in cities are worried about getting mugged ten feet from your doorstep you need to get out more.

If cussing at cops and spitting on them is such a taboo in small towns why no footage from Jan 6 where you not only had that but beating cops to within an inch of their lives. The video only showed certain kinds of objectionable behavior. That combined with the lynching backdrop the dog whistle is complete. Clearly, you've never heard the phrase "sundown town". I suggest you look it up.

The video clearly shows they are cool with all that behavior so long as the perps are white.

Decades of Agatha Christie adaptations have made it clear to me that English country villages are terrifying. Between that and Midsomer Murders I'm surprised there's anyone left alive out there.

Yep, and it takes the clergy to solve the crimes because the police can't figure it out .

Grantchester, Father Brown, etc

Well to be fair they are saying don’t do it in a small town. They are perfectly fine with beating cops and committing all sorts of felonies, they would just prefer to do it on the road.

And a lot of them are just fine with it if the victims are black too no matter where it happens. Of course as you say, the perps have to be white.

I was talking about what happens to people who are bigots. I would speak differently to a bigot rather than about one.

It seems that you think I might be the bigot and you are pointing that out to me. I am OK with that. Making false assumptions is hard to beat. I have made plenty of bigoted assumptions. It is almost inevitable, in my opinion, that everybody is a bigot in one way or another and the more you hate bigots the less likely you will be willing to look at your own. I leave it up to you, therefore, to make your own determination.

I have many seemingly conservative traits. I call um like I see um on gut instinct. That guy smells like a bigot to me and the reason I feel that way is there is not a thing wrong with being from a small town. I moved into a farm family in Healsdburg Ca. when I was around ten and then moved out to a house in the country out side of town on the old 101, freight trains in the back and lumber trucks out front. I got to see two wild otters in the creek out back. I moved there from an app house in San Francisco and thought it was a thousand times better. Back then there were thousands of acres of wilderness I could explore. My Uncle owned 19 cabins on the Russian river and I had access to a Kayak. Life is good.

People who make fun of small town or country people or city people, for that matter, make me laugh. How absurd to think you are a somebody based on where you are from. Have you ever heard me brag about being born in the same hospital as Barack Obama? Well, on rare occasions maybe.

I think one cure for bigotry is coming up against the utter futility of rage. Hidden behind rage is grief that anger is there to keep you from feeling. But if you crack through you will find that grief is heeling. Many a bigot is broken when a loved one turns out to be of the hated class, a gay child, a black grandchild, or being in the same trench in battle.

Put another way - things not to try in a small town:
Have any kind of decent life if you are a member of a racial, religious or sexual minority...and, increasingly, even if you aren't.
In most southern rural small towns most white males also can't have any type of decent life.

This is a really important point. Life for minorities in those communities might be worse but life for the white majority is also horrible. They are just wastelands.

That idyllic small town America you always see in the movies is mostly a fiction. Those towns are often a Denny’s and a Burger King supported by people working at the local federal prison that was located there because NIMBYs forced it there.

This is influenced by me spending a night in Sayre, Oklahoma about two years ago which was one of the goddamn saddest nights of my life.

My personal advice to everyone here. Never got to Sayre. It’s not that it was dangerous or anything bad happened to me, it was just so crushingly sad.

they literally HATE lower polluting vehicles (as you point out, they fucking coal roll them) and any environmental initiative, and those include clean air and water. they literally vote for and fight for the opposite.

Guess what type of town this woman lives in. Go ahead, take a wild guess. I'll even give you a hint . . . it's not New York or Chicago:

We aliens have a rules. Never leave the mothership alone and never divulge information unknown to the general public. Any clues to the fact that you have secret and special knowledge you are privy to can lead to incarceration and live dissection. You can bet your antennas and suckers and green blood that sister was teleported out of here never to be heard from again. She will be wiped and committed, rest assured.

This is one of the weird things to me with the conservative delusion about the cities. As I often tell people, I live in Portland, supposedly a hotbed of lawlessness and leftist violence. And yet one of my fav pasttimes is urban hiking. I'm one of those people who happen to love walking at a steady 4mph pace. There are trails all over the city (especially on my side of town), and I enjoy hiking them. I also walk just to get groceries at the store. And I've been doing this for years. I even walked downtown and watched the 2020 protests.
And the one thing that has never happened to me in all this walking about in this 'dangerous' city is anything that would make feel unsafe. In fact, if there's any time or place I might unsafe, it's from some entitled road raging prick while I'm driving (and I'm admittedly an aggressive driver).
I've also visited a lot of small towns. And my experience there has been far less glorious than this rosy we-all-love-our-neighbors bullshit. More like petty bickering, corrupt small town cops, and big-fish-in-a-small-town bullies. I recall once trying to help a friend set up a business in a small town on the WA coast, and the local official hostility to outside small business investment was just insane. They were either local money or major corporations or get out.
From my perspective, everything conservatives say about big cities and small towns are baldfaced lies that, for some bizarre reason, we choose to entertain. And we need to stop doing that.
Their beloved small town is a corrupt shit hole with no jobs where half the population lives in trailer parks even though the real estate market collapsed long ago. Even conservatives know this. It's why they all want to move to the suburbs.

Prison is there for gerrymandering too. There are some nice small towns, generally tourist traps or commutor cities.

Because there is a direct inverse correlation between the height of the lift on a small towners truck and the amount of coal it rolls and the small towners' manhood.
Which admittedly makes them a lot like big city guys in exotic cars, but with 1/10th the cash.

This is because they've brainwashed into believing that anything less than extravegant displays of consumerism means you must be poor.

Man, if you think Sayre is bad, I'd stay away from Arkansas. Sayre is a kingdom compared to most towns in Arkansas.
