I found a copy of Jasc paint shop pro9 while I was going through some old disc and installed it . When photoshop became really popular I started using it and forgot about paint shop pro. I can't believe I stopped using it.
It really is one great piece of software. It has so many features and you can tell from the design that the people who made it really put their heart into it.
It handles images faster than adobe products do now. The interface is a bit dated but I think I will be keeping this one installed now that I discovered it again.

It is really a shame Jasc sold out to corel and the program later became corel paintshop photo . They took a great program and bloated it in ways I only thought adobe could.

Agreed. It seems like their used to be a bunch of good photo editing programs out there, but now the only one anyone seems to think of is Photoshop, which is horribly over-priced. If Adobe would release a "non-pro" version for about $100 that had all of the important tools and features but cut out a lot of the fluff, hardware support, and optimizations, I'd be more than happy to buy it. Their cheaper versions like Photoshop Elements or Photoshop Album are an absolute joke.

With all of that said, I'm getting by fine for now with Paint.NET for easy stuff, and GIMP for anything a little bit harder. GIMP is great as a workhorse, but man the interface sucks. Even simple things like saving a file seem extra convoluted.

Your post did remind me that some kind of photo-editing program came with my Envy 14, so I'm off to dig through my files and see what it was. Edit: looks like Corel Paint Shop Photo Pro X3. Hmm, maybe I'll give it a shot.

It's actually Paint Shop Pro Photo X1, X2, and X3. I have X1 and it is PSP with photo capabilities added. It does a good job. I would guess X3 has more capability.

PSP was acquired by Corel after (or slightly before) 9.0 and many persons have equated it to "Symantecizing" PSP. i.e. Corel crapified it

I purchased both 7.x and 9.x and I prefer 7.x but 9.x is OK, too. Haven't tried version 10 (X) and beyond but I don't hear good things about it.

Still using Paint Shop Pro 7 here. . . it does everything I need. I looked at version 8 when it came out and they'd changed so much that finding things was difficult. . . and I've stayed with 7 ever since. I see that it's 10 years old now :-O

Yeah, a lot of die hard PSP users claim that PSP X is the best release, since it's the final version that JASC had a real hand in.

Starting with X1, Corel started introducing bloat as well as a phone-home license protection service (ProtexisLicensing).

There are some useful features (like improved 16-bit editing support, smart object removal, etc...) and nice UI redesign in subsequent versions. The bloat, poor stability and performance don't offset those features to some people. Their RAW converter definitely isn't worth the effort.

I've had PSP X, X1 and X2...then finally came to the realization that I don't really need it. Paint.net and Gimp suffice just fine for my casual uses. Personally, I'm more interested in "dark room" software like Lightroom now.

edit: For those interested and running supported systems, the OSS project darktable is pretty damn incredible.
