Posted at MacAddict Forums a day or two ago, asking how to optimize installation and performance for SETI@Home on G3's, just in case I get permission to install it on the machines at work. No answers, yet. Heck, I am the only one that posted in the SETI area of their Forums in the last several days. How did they get to be the fifth ranked spot? Were they all enthused about it for a while, then dropped it?

I think you got that right ,I seem to remember some story about them being very p*ssed off when v3.03 was enfocred due to there machines taking a larger hit than PC's (re WU times). But I wouldn't of thought they'd be dead!

Just got this answer.

<< There is a CLI version for Mac OS X. However, no such thing for Classic OSes. They should really make a new client now - without the graphics. Only imporant info like % done and user and work unit info. I would like the next version to be really optimised for the Mac platform - Windows clients are usually faster. >>

So basically, it would hardly be worth it for me to assimilate those G3's at work, unless they happen to upgrade to OS-X.

phatstyl was referring to RC5, the t is next to the r :). If you decide not to do RC5, and that is the best use, a G3 looks like it takes about 20 hrs per WU. If there's lots of machines, it would be worth it if they're on 24/7.

I am not sure these would manage twenty hour WU's. If I read the MacAddict Forums information correctly, I could only run the GUI version, as the only CLI version is for OS-X. Plus these G3's are some of the earlier ones, so not quite as fast. Where can I download RC5 from? I want to try it on my machine before proposing anything to the higher-ups at work.

Well, I am going to record some specifics at work next time I am there. Model of the machine, processor speed, RAM, OS version, etc. I will post specific stats over there to see if I can get any of them to reply on the best way to set up SETI@Home on G3's. I wish we had REAL computers at work. :(

Hey, even if they only do 1 WU a day each, that's still 50 WUs a day, not too shabby at all.

Yeah. I guess I will just try it out on one machine, and see how it does. Someone, Sukhoi I think, posted a Link at one point to a FAQ for doing SETI@Home on Macintoshes. Could whoever that was please repost it?

What is OGR?

Another Dnet project, it stands for Optimal Golomb Ruler, and "refers to a set of non-negative integers such that no two distinct pairs of numbers from the set have the same difference." Real helpful, huh? Check here OGR

G3's are most efficient at OGR by far, so you'd be best running that

I don't think there's that big a difference between the two, a G3 might be 10% more efficient at OGR compared to RC5, same ballpark though. It's really K6's that have a big difference.

No matter what you pick, 50 G3's are going to be a nice boost for the team. it'll be a very nice asslamination! :D:D

At this point, I think I am going to push forward with my request to try SETI@Home. I will try it on one machine, and see how it works out. If it is worth doing, I will go forward with it, and maybe request to put OGR and RC5 on some other machines. If SETI@Home is a bomb, I will request one of these others.

Yeah, it is like a tomb over there in the SETI@Home area.

oh :(

Btw it doesn't matter if they are a bit slow @ SETI ,it'll still add to your output :).
Remember we need all the help we can get to stay ahead of DSLR

As much as we're like to catch up quickly to you, why not pop by our forum. We have a few Mac experts who will help you to optimize those Macs for SETI.

Actually, here is a great link to help you:
OPTIMIZING SETI@HOME PROCESSING ON MACS

I know, helping the enemy, but it's all for the greater cause. :)

Check the TA speed page. I still say that it's more efficient at OGR. :p TBird is 3.4x for RC5 and 8.1x for OGR. G3 is 3.3x for RC5, but 8.8x for OGR. But if you'd rather run RC5, that's fine. The G3 isn't a huge amount better at OGR or anything, just somewhat.

We ALWAYS want new computers to run SETI, but at least Sukhoi is being honest about what's the most efficient for those systems. Heck, maybe some OGR junkie has 50 Tbirds they'd be willing to trade.. :p
