cliffs:
- found ramen place
- apparently has a reptuation for being an 'entertainment bar'
- wtf is an entertainment bar?
- planning on going there this weekend but would like to know more

i ran into a little japanese place called "mamasan" while doing some errands. lately i have been craving some decent ramen so i took a closer look. it appeared to be a restaurant of sorts but what surprised me was their hours, they were open til 2am in a city not known for having much of a nightlife.

so i googled the place and found the following relevant data:
translated page from some japanese site
yelp review

At night the place turns into a Karaoke Bar (I've heard it's a Japanese style 'entertainment bar' by word of the wind, but I've never dare ventured in at night). When I was having lunch there the other day a few people wondered in wanting to Karaoke, so I'm guessing that feature is relatively popular.

the reviews about the place arent that great, so i don't think i will be making a trip for some ramen, but the above comment piqued my interest. the place is relatively close to my house so if i can find a spot where i can just chill and get some drinks instead of having to go across the bridge to seattle that would be real convenient.

anyways... i know what a karaoke bar is but i've never heard of a japanese style 'entertainment bar'. i tried googling the term and came up with some data but not much. as far as i can tell it is one of those hostess bars? Where they have cute girls serve you watered down drinks, make you order a bunch of overpriced shit, flirt with you, and then hit you with a humongous bill after all is said and done.

this supports my suspicions:

citation from liquor control board
Violation:
SOLICITING DRINKS/DANCING
Paid penalty in the amount of: $2000

which is a huge fine considering the other citations on the site were ~$500 each. but if anyone can confirm or give me more insight into this stuff i'd be much obliged. im going to visit this weekend, just to see an entertainment bar. but just in case it turns out to be a karaoke place i would like to rely upon the vast knowledge of atot japanophiles to clue me in to what an entertainment bar is in case i come up empty.

Japan is usually known for its pervert nature. Panty machines anyone?

Umm ... ramen places usually have 'bar' seating. I think that's all it means.

Sounds like a hostess bar. Girls sit and keep you company while you drink and sing. A bottle of liquor should be about $350 or so and any munchies about $75-100 a plate. Tip each girl $100 for the evening and the waiter another $100.

thats what i figured, i assume those prices are there regardless of whether you use the girls company, and also the reason they got hit with soliciting drinks.

maybe ill just stay home with a bag of dorritos and some beer.

very interesting documentary. i always wondered how those things operated, for the first half i was like how the hell are those girls getting money for that sheit... then they said what they did and it was sad.

going to look for a higher quality version of this.

QFT. a bar is already supposed to be entertaining, so the redundancy implies the availability an even greater source of entertainment: titties. :D
