I remember the initial sumo allegations hitting the press in the mid 2000s. The yakuza are firmly entrenched in the culture and society of Japan. The used underwear vending machines are the least of their worries.

I know a few people living in japan now and the medias complete blackout after essentially being bullied is a disgrace to the credibility of their media. The people there basically dont have a voice.

Thought there was a war between the cops and Yakuza going on? And something about the cops warning a lot of companies about all of this and even there being a position at many Japanese companies of some type of organized crime adviser and who was often a cop or some other law enforcement or government official? How are the cops not watching over the media industry?

I've seen numerous sources that most businesses and government have ties to Yakuza in Japan. They don't even have to know / want it, as the Yakuza have enough money to simply buy into the companies via stock. Quite a few of the bigger gangs have legitimate businesses that do very well.

Their organized crime learned that if you integrate yourself into the market, it is much harder to get you out.

Sumo is even more corrupt that FIFA. As far as I recall, it is completely owned by Yakuza.

There is no doubt that anything connected to Sumo is, by proxy, a Yakuza endeavor.

There's a chapter covering match fixing in the original Freakonomics. The wrestlers have all the reasons in the world to fix matches.

Maybe when the World Cup is pulled from Qatar, could you imagine the Super Bowl being played in an outdoor stadium in February in Alaska? That's pretty close to what FIFA has done.

(minus the slave labour debate)

The Qatar thing is truly bewildering. If FIFA keeps this up as a host for more than a year from now, then I think they have officially abandoned all attempts to project themselves as a legitimate organization. Well, in some ways it would be great for them to draw it out, let those dozen or so 17 year-old billionaires out in the desert spend all of their money on stadiums that don't yet exist, and then back out. ....well, then there is the human capital that is spent in that time. So that's not good.

...and I remember making that comment a few weeks ago, regarding Sumo. Was this thread always about the IOC/Olympics? that is weird that I put Sumo in place of the Olympics. :hmm:

Yes the topic is the Japanese Olympics but read the OP and the other comment again and you will understand why you said that.

I remember video from their last great earthquake and the first people to ground zero was the yakuza handing out food and first aid emergency gear.

Ever since then the community likes them even more.
