according to my brother (who takes kung fu and studies some in beijing), teachers beat their students with sticks like that all the time to teach them how to take a hit. it's to make them less sensitive to being hit with stucks and punches... but, it's also a way to get them to work harder and not mess up.
yeah, it's jacked up, but the students and parents of the students accept it.
and i don't think that guy's japanese.

Well we block PVC pipes against or bare forearms and shins to toughen them up in shuri ryu, but our senseis don't draw blood...at least not on purpose. The line has to be drawn somewhere.![]()

Those people appear to be pretty advanced students, and besides, they are free to leave at any time. Our instructors never used sticks, but they hit us all the time in sparring, and even sometimes just to see if we were paying attention. It's for awareness and conditioning - and as far as conditioning goes that's not even that bad.

Did you? Please reveal all if you did.
I've heard stories - ripping bark off trees with bare hands until they are raw, etc.
