Japan's desperate housewives happy to pay for sexual healing

IN TOKYO

THE women who flock to Dr Kim Myong-gan?s clinic in a western suburb of Tokyo are desperate. Invariably they are well-dressed, intelligent and from outwardly stable and normal households.

There is, however, something very important missing from their married lives: sex. "Almost all the women who come to the clinic are married, but those marriages have been sexless for five years, 10 years, even 15 years," says Kim, a sexologist whose radical therapy techniques have won him adulation among Japan?s long-suffering female population.

The prescription for their pain is a date with a member of his hand-picked "sex volunteer corps". A team of 40 men, aged between 32 and 60 and chosen for their looks, sense of humour and ability to listen while the woman unburdens herself of the shortcomings of her husband, is operating in six Japanese cities.

After a meal in an up-market restaurant and a couple of drinks in a bar, they retire to a hotel to complete the healing process.

The term "sexless marriage" was first coined in Japan in the early 1990s, when therapists were confronted by a surge in the number of women admitting dissatisfaction with their love lives.

While Japan may be famous for the no-holds barred nature of its infamous "entertainment districts", in its annual sex survey in 2004 by Durex the average number of sexual encounters in 41 countries was 103 each year. Japan ranked last of the 41 nations with just 46 occasions a year. Britain was ninth on the list, with 119 times a year, while the top spot went to the frolicking French, with 137 encounters.

The solution the doc has that this sensationalist article reports may be weird, but the prevailing problem is not, and not isolated to Japan, or Japanese men, or does it fall into the convenient category of another 'thing' that American men are better for towards American women than Japanese men are for their women.


A sex study done by Durex... Far as I know in Japan they buy their own brands and by American standards, are more expensive but better material... so who's to say how good their sampling survery really was before reporting about it... It could be, but we have to also consider that it may not be. We'd be better served seeing the total number of surveys done there and if it was a accurate random survey of the population.

More than that, it's common for teenage/school girls in Japan to prostitute themselves and their clients are usually middle aged men.

If one lived in a culture were there wasn't much moral outcry against this behavior, and they had the money to do younger girls, this would be the expected outcome.

It is a TV show dude. Thats all. It may have some interesting plot points but I don't think Al Bundy portrays the average American white male. That was a very dysfunctional family. There is a difference in paying young men for sex and watching some TV show called Desperate Housewives.

Anyways there have been few studies done like this and Japan/China/Korea usually end up on the bottom for yearly sexual relations. Usually its France and Italy up top. Again seems to me as if they have 'being a man problems'.

41 times a year? Wow thats low, real low. Me and my wife of 9 years still have sex on average 3 times a week. Rarely do we go more than 3 days tops in between doing the wild. Man, sex is so important for a healthy marriage. I remember one time talking to this guy and he was having sex like 2 times a month with his wife, I was wtf. You show me a marriage that doesn't have a good sex life and I guarantee its a marriage full of problems. Its more than just the pleasure, its also very important for bonding as well. I feel bad for couples like that, thats just sad.

350,000 people polled in 41 countries in the durex survey. USA 110 times average, Italy 108 times average, Taiwan 103 times average, China 90 times average, Vietnam 87 times average. Korea wasn't included in the poll. Interestingly enough in the same survey amount of different sexual partners, China lead with 20 different partners as average. And Japan in third with 13 different partners as average. USA was 10 different partners as average, Global Survey Average was also 10.
