Japanese developers changing focus from Sony -> Nintendo

The Nihon Keizai Shinbun (Nikkei) is reporting both in its online and print versions that various Japanese development houses are reallocating their resources from Sony platforms to competing Nintendo consoles.

Due to good sales and a strong installed base, Nintendo?s consoles are getting more attractive to developers. The news report specifically mentions the major software houses Sega and Bandai-Namco, who are both producing twice as much software titles compared to last year. Together with Capcom all three publishers are forecast to divert their resources to Nintendo?s products.

Meanwhile, games geared towards the PlayStation 3 continue to suffer from higher development costs relative to Nintendo's entry. However, Nikkei expects that development efforts on Sony's current console will focus more on high profile titles that could be potential big sellers - the analyst firm Screen Digest observed a similar pattern among Western developers in a report released last week.

The print edition also confirmed that Square-Enix plans no release of PlayStation 3 games for the current year.

No-brainer. Wii cheaper to develop for plus has more units out in the wild.

I just hope this doesn't mean a ton of shoveled out 'party games' that were half-assed.

pretty much all it has now. thats why my Wii is currently sitting on Ebay.

Yes, it looks like in Japan the numbers are going to stay Wii > PS3 > 360, with 360 sales half of PS3 or less, and Wii beating down the PS3 by 5-10 to 1.

Wii dominance helps the 360 because even though it's a failure in Japan, at least there won't be a flood of quirky PS3-exclusive titles from Japan to possibly be exported to the US and Europe.

MS needs to turn over their marketing to the best/most successful firm in Japan. It is truly atrocious and mind-boggling considering they're actually flooding with JRPGs now.

Good point. As a Wii and 360 owner, that's great news for me.

Trusty Bell just came out recently if I remember right (or is coming out really soon)... yet another JRPG that's trying to push the popularity. I've read a bit about it at IGN, and it seems to be pretty decent looking. Note that the name is Eternal Sonata in America.
