How could this have happened? A trawler can't be THAT quiet, passive sonar on the sub should have picked it up before they surfaced.

So do I, but I wish even more they had prevented this in the first place. It seems like they could have. Although all the facts are not out yet, so that is an assumption on my part.

I don't think there were any evil intentions, but perhaps there was failure to follow procedure.

The Japanese boat should not have gotten in the way of the US Sub in US waters.

We need to teach Japan another lesson.

If it had been a torpedo, there would be no survivors. Those things are designed to sink ships with titanium hulls. It would decimate a fishing boat.

UG, we are pretty well tied in with Japan's economy, aggressive action would not be advisable. If Japan suffers, so do we to some extent. And if the ship had permission to be there (or was international waters), then it's not their fault.

What does Japan need with American fish? Why should they be studying how to take fish out of the mouths of American citizens?

Sounds like the sub hit its target. The Japanese never learn.

Looks like there will probably be casualties, they still haven't found 9 people.

Seems that the ENTIRE crew of the sub needs to go back to boot camp. This is obvios just lack of training.

edit. I find it stupid that in all the news storys they have to say that the sub did not get damaged, who cares about the darn sub, there are 9-10 people missing.

I think the US navy is really in the middle of a planetary wide plot to take over the earth with styrofoam chopsticks! Pokeman chopstick fighter. They could do some damage on your ankles, ya know?

Actually people it wasnt a fishing trawler it was a training ship (it may have been a trawler in a past life though).

I'd say the sub crew decided to play a little 'lets stalk the nip training ship & pretend its a Ruskie frigate' game, & got a bit to clever for their own good.

maybe they had used the periscope, and there had been cute azn girls on board, and them seasick sailors figured they'd pop up right next to em and impress em, and work on public relations a little, but missed.

How could this happen? A billion dollar sub colliding with a little boat... Very interesting... I would hate to be the captain or should I say, soon to be private?
