Japan: PSP Sales Double, Beat Wii

PSP sales more than doubled during the week ended December 16 as Sony?s handheld left all but the mighty DS in the shade.
As is the norm, DS was the bestselling system, with sales up almost 55,000 week-over-week.

However, it was PSP sales, which rocketed by 93,000 units, that were most surprising, especially considering that only one PSP title made the latest Japanese software chart - Hot Shots Golf Portable 2 at No19.

Wii sales shot up by over 50,000 units as PS3 sales slumped dramatically. PS2 sales witnessed a less significant fall, while 360 sales were in line with the previous week?s figures.

Nintendo DS - 222,144
PSP - 184,610
Wii - 170,558
PlayStation 3 - 63,720
PlayStation 2 - 18,025
Xbox 360 - 8,561

It's pretty impressive, you gotta admit.

That is pretty impressive actually. Hopefully this will stick and they'll start making more/better games for it.

Holy crap, 360s are barely moving in Japan.

Not nearly enough RPG's featuring characters with huge heads, doe-eyes and spiky hair on the 360 to move units in Japan.

Yeah, but the PSP has been out MUCH MUCH longer than the Wii. I am really surprised Sony hasnt given up on PSP. Seems like everyone else has. I havent touched mine in ages. DS get played everyday. Maybe the Star Wars verion boosted Japan sales. Japanese love American crap and gobble it up.

Too bad none of these descriptions correctly describe the characters of the Monster Hunter series. Monster Hunter Portable 2 takes the spot as the highest selling PSP game in Japan, passing over its predecessor, which use to be the highest. The game reminds me of Diablo or other WRPG designs.

I'm looking forward to the new Monster Hunter that's coming to the wii.

Spike in PSP sales might be due to the new Blood Red version rather than the software. Not likely, but possible. 😉

I know local stores have been selling out of the PSP regularly the last several weeks. Not as bad as the Wii demand, but the demand is there. They don't keep nearly as many PSP's in stock as DS Lites, though.

The PSP has more than enough games and collections to keep me entertained, just waiting for them to get the Daxter bundle back in stock.

The 360 has more of those games than the PS3 does.

It was a joke, sparky, let's not get all uptight about it. I don't give two shits how many units any console sells in Japan.

Does anyone want to make a prediction as to when Nintendo will stop being the top dog in the video game industry?

Week after week, month after month, for the second straight year, Nintendo has moved more hardware units than any other console maker on the market.

I remember lots of people saying the Wii 'fad' would be over by mid-2007. Now we're almost to 2008, the NDS Lite is pushing 1.6 million units per week during the holidays, the Wii is selling out as soon as UPS delivers it to stores, Nintendo's stock price has skyrocketed and it's banking huge cash reserves on the weakness of the dollar.

So will the 'fad' end by mid-2008? Sooner? Later? Never?
