I spent some time in Japan and they had clubs with signs stating Japanese only. Went to Roppongi a few times and tried renting a hotel room and was refused. I don't know if that was because we were drunk at the time, in the military, or because we were not Japanese.

I was taking my friends around Tokyo (Ikebukuro) and I pointed out a Soapland to them. So after two of the pushy hostess girls comes up to us to give us flyers, one guy goes up to the door and tries to get by the bouncers. DENIED! haha. If I only spoke Japanese a little better, he probably could have had a good time. 😕

Well, I don't know about "most racist country" but they certainly seem xenophobic and have some really weird preoccupations with race. Sex Smurf's sig is one example of that, as is that blog by the black English teacher in Japan is another. (http://outpostnine.com/)

In my experience in Texas asian people are often more racists, especially against blacks, than white people. Prob. a lack of education of the older generation just like all racism is usually due to ignorance than anything else.

lol...what are you talking about. i'm from texas, and i'm asian...

in texas, most asians act like and WISH they were black....we call them 'bumble bees'

OP,

We're not racist, you're just not capable of understanding us. Unlike you big, dumb, fat, lazy, hairy and politically twisted Americans, we believe that generalizations DO hold water and those that fall under such scrutiny are actually capable of accepting their social views instead of being defensive about them. We are your new god, fatso boys.

as sarcastic as his statement sounds, it is sad that this is the true mentality of the modern generation of Japs.

Same thing for Koreans. They think they're better than me and I'm Chinese. Let's not even talk about Whites and Blacks. Who copied who?? That's right. Chinese is the best asian race! We're so down to earth. =)

I notice Chinese hate themselves the most. Each race has their stereotyped problems.

Yeah.....definately a generalization. I spent 2 weeks in japan, not in Tokyo, but a small city in the northern part of the island (the REAL Japan). I had a great time, and everyone was friendly. Bar owner asked me to come to his "Texas" BBQ but it was after I was leaving. I tought him what the meaning of "Bullsh!t" was. Went to Hot Spa, no issues there...just the Japanese men checkin out a white guy but no one got out and left. Had teenagers practicing English on me which we had fun because I practiced my Japanese on them.

Had many other great experiences, those are just a couple

Interesting...I just finished reading Crichton's Rising Sun. The John Connor character gives some pretty curious perspectives on Japanese psychology, particularly w.r.t Americans. I don't know how accurate it is, but it was an interesting read. From all the movies I have seen with Japanese characters or locales, I always got the impression that the Japanese were fascinated with Americans and the younger generation desperately tried to ape them. But then again, these were all Hollywood movies, so there might have been a bias.

Great, now people are using fictional books and movies as references.

Because the Chinese helped North Koreans or the country would be united by now! :|

I lived in Japan for 3 months and saw both the city and the country side. In general the Japanese are really nice, i woudlnt like it there otherwise. They will always treat you nice and generally wont say anything to your face. It doesnt happen every minute but after being there a for a while you just notice things that get you thinking about how a lot of people actually think. Walk around with someone that speaks japanese and you will catch people talking about you are talking bad about you.

I tried to use small words, considering this is ATOT. How about I draw you a picture next time?

Sounds like fun...

Been to Japan, a beautiful country and I can't wait to go there again.
It's true you definitely stick out in a crowd there, they are all skinny and about 4 ft. tall (well... shorter than the usual anyway), and they speak next to no English, and yeah they are probably talking behind your back saying "look at that huge (6"2@220) freak, and his hair is yellow oh my budha..." but you would do the same. Most Japanese people I ran into were VERY nice, yes there was the occasional a$$hole, but we have them here too.
Bottom line imho: different culture and thus a little misunderstood (like how they slaughter poor dolphins) yes. Racist? the majority no, but most are VERY patriotic which some of us may consider as a form of racism.

When I went to Japan over the summer, the people were all unbelievably nice, in both the big cities like Tokyo and the small cities like Nara. My friend who is American born Japanese never mentioned anything of foreigner hate or any backtalk. As far as I know they were very gracious and I wouldn't generalize to call them racist. Every nation has pride through nationalism and I don't think America is any different than Japan in that aspect.

Then again, I'm not white and I am Asian and I was not there in those Ex-Pat areas like Roppongi looking to cause trouble.

Yes, the Japanese are racist in practice as a society though they are generally too polite personally to be offensively racist from what I saw. I've always had positive experiences one on one with the Japanese, but institutionally, there is considerable bias.

I wouldn't worry about traveling there. We traveled around a bit; my in-laws traveled; and my parents traveled around. None of us experienced any racism or hostility. Both sets of parents say to this day how impressed they were with the hospitality and warmth of the Japanese people, particularly outside Tokyo.

Foreigners are always visitors there, though -- never locals, no matter how long they live there or how good their Japanese is. I miss Japan. 🙁
