12-7-2004 Japan May Be Headed for Another Slowdown
TOKYO - Japan's economy may be headed for another slowdown, government data issued Tuesday indicated.
After more than a decade of stagnation, the world's second largest economy has been witnessing a modest rebound recently, marking six straight quarters of growth.
But fears have been growing that a decline in exports will push down growth, while a rebound in consumer spending in Japan won't be enough to keep the recovery going.
The data came a day before the Cabinet Office was scheduled to release revised numbers Wednesday for gross domestic product.
The revision may show the economy actually shrank in the July-September quarter, instead of squeezing out weak growth.
