Jane's Advanced Strike Fighter

So, this is a new release on Steam. I hadn't heard of any Jane's games since at least the 90s...is this any good?

Edit: I played the video on Steam...third person view...not looking good...

Saw the video too, looks like a crappy arcade flight shooter, like Hawx. I'm partial to combat sims like DCS A10C and KA50, so meh.

The last true simulation to bear the Jane's logo was F/A-18. EA just digs it back out every now and then to make their arcade games look cool.

I haven't played a Jane's game since AH64D Longbow, which was my introduction to PC gaming. From the video, this game looks like another console/PC port 🙁

I got psyched because it had the Jane's name and they were always quality sims. This game looks like a POS arcade game. Not that those are all bad, but Jane's should not be associated with that style.

That's what I thought when I saw it on Steam so I ran here to post...immediately after posting I noticed the video.

Instant deboner.

Pro Tip: If it's a flight "sim" that's also available on the consoles, it's going to suck. Period. That's not to say there are entertaining flight games like Ace Combat on consoles, but anything involving the slightest amount of depth or realism is not going to be in both platforms.

Never look back:

DCS A-10C Warthog

Falcon 4.0: Allied Force<-----Tons of great community mods and add-ons.

And of course, all the IL-2 games if you're willing to go back to WWII era planes.

With today's technology and advancement in PC components I'm kinda surprised they dont make some new Jane's fighter sims. I would think the interest from the user base is there.

Falcon 4.0 is how I got my start in flight sims, awesome game to this day even if the graphics aren't latest and greatest. Still have it and the 2 inch thick manual 😀

Read a review of the X360 version, which pretty much called it a steaming pile of crap. I can't imagine its much better on PC.

thats why no one makes them any more. no one wants to spend days learning how play, they just want to start playing.

i used to like flight sims back in the 486 days but they just got boring and too complex.

Really? No one makes them? That's why DCS still has their series going, and IL-2 just came out with the Cliffs of Dover a year or so ago?

Yeah, it's a niche market, but so what? Not everyone wants the latest CoD shoveled down their throat, or some oversimplified "plane fly and shoot missiles pow pow!" 12-year-old approved bilge.

That's why these types of games will always have smaller, but fiercely loyal fanbases. We see it with Paradox and other deep strategy games, we see it with flight sims, etc. So, yeah, some people actually DO appreciate some depth in their games outside of "Press X Button to Win Game"

The learning part can drag on, but once you're into it, its pretty rewarding. It's gotta be something you're into 😀

back in the 486 days there were tons of them. now there's what, the 2 you mentioned? obviously there is a reason for it. i just gave a possible one, and one that is why i quit playing them. no need to get all bitchy and defensive about it.

I don't understand why there is no middle ground here. I mean, it takes 50 button flicks to start up in DCS Black Shark, but why can't you at least have a game where maybe it takes 5 button pushes? Can you imagine if Battlefield at least let you play like that with your jets?

Personally, I don't see a point for a middle ground like that. what purpose would it serve? It seems that either you're a hardcore simmer who wants everything exactly like it is in real life or you're a gamer and you just want to get into the action.

Well, what I really want to see is a modern themed MMO FPS. Like World War 2 Online, but, modern. Limited resources, you actually need to fly your jet back to base and land it otherwise your team loses a jet. And to help you land you'd actually have flaps and airbrake and a couple of other things. But no 50 button startup sequence.

I agree, pretty pointless for a game like Battlefield to model ignition lol... for what? Besides, DCS sims have simplified startup routines if you want to go that route 😉

There were tons of sims back in 486 days, sure, but most of them were crap. Only a few now, but the few there are, are pretty amazing. Most of that is because of userbase, like what Falcon 4.0 has evolved into, even FSX. DCS is one of the last developers that puts everything into their games, hopefully they stick around.

Foul piece of shite. Its truly a sad day when they soil Jane's name by putting it on that arcade shooter and call it sim.

If you want a true flight sim go pay a flight instructor I say. Personally I want to be flying through an environment so quickly I don't realize how fake looking any flight sim really is.

Because you can fly a fighter jet, go on bombing runs, fight the Battle of Britain, and pilot Russian attack helicopters through eastern Europe with a flight instructor, right? Right.
