Getting a star is really not a big deal....its not like a hall of fame. They way it works is that you get a group to "sponsor" you and they nominate ($$$$) you to get a star....if $$$ works out then you get a star.

James Doohan has actually had a tremendous impact on the world, more than most actors could dream of.

Just like Nichelle Nichols's Uhura inspired women (especially non-white women) to believe that they could work in a position of authority (communications officer on a starship), Doohan's Scotty helped inspire a generation of kids to become engineers and scientists.

You might not have the P4 or Athlon system you're using now if Scotty hadn't convinced those kids to pick engineering or another hard science as a career path.

Shatner was great as Cap'n Kirk, but he just inspired us to look for hot alien babes to sleep with :)

I think they also have to pay some kind of upkeep for the stars - it's always sounded like a bit of a racket to me.
