What is that metallic scope that is always in the James Bond movies? It follows James to the middle of the screen and then he shoots it, the screen goes red and then it wobbles. Is it supposed to be a sniper scope or something? I can't figure out what the hell it is...

Goldeneye is on right now and it's something that has bugged me.

I was thinking that, but there are spiral separations between some of the metal. The barrel of a gun is smooth on the inside...

Yeah, it's the view from inside the barrel of a gun. The spiral pattern that you see on the outsides are the rifling patterns within the barrel. Modern gun barrels are not smooth on the inside. The spiral pattern causes the bullets to turn in flight like a football, resulting in a straighter trajectory.

Meh, watching the "Quantum of Solace" behind the scenes that is being shown between commercials. Looks good so far.

FYI, they've been showing the "spiral" (aka rifling) of the barrel since the very first Bond movie (Dr. No, 1962). I don't know how common a rifled barrel was on a pistol back then (assuming that Bond's potential attacker was using a pistol), but as the trend was established from the outset, it's no wonder it became the norm.

Rifling was in use in all firearms long before 1962. Rifling was around even when bullets were still sphere-like. For example, rifling is the primary difference between a "rifle" and a "musket", where rifle is taken in the old-school muzzle-loading sense of the word.

Now I think I know why gun control is so popular.
