Broncos quarterback Jake Plummer flashed an obscene gesture toward the stands Sunday after throwing a first-quarter interception in Denver's 20-17 victory over Miami.

"I apologize for that to our fans and everyone," Plummer said. "It wasn't directed to our fans. One guy got into my head a little bit. It shouldn't be that way."

Plummer finished 16-for-30 with two interceptions. He has no touchdowns and six interceptions in the last two games and has been the target of non-stop criticism recently in Denver.

Last week, former teammate Shannon Sharpe ripped into him, although Plummer said he hadn't heard the comments and labeled them nothing more than "Chinook winds blowing off the mountains."

He wasn't able to turn the deaf ear to the fans, however.

The interception came on a side-arm throw that was nabbed by Dolphins defensive end Jay Williams, the fourth defensive lineman to pick him off this season. After the play, TV cameras caught Plummer putting his middle finger behind his head while sitting on the bench, without turning around.

"I'm not going to lie and say I didn't do it," Plummer said. "I've never done that before. It was one of those things where I got caught up in the emotion of a big game, and my emotions got the best of me."

Plummer wouldn't reveal what the fan said to rile him.

"He didn't say "`Good job,"' Plummer said. "On the road you just block them out, and when you are at home you don't like it, but all you can do is try to go out there and reverse it and make them cheer for you. That's all you can do."

He should apologize.

For the $$$ that these athletes make... they should just suck it all up, unless someone hits them first.

a mediocre QB at best. i guess now he can no longer blame the coach, organization or team he's on for his lack of success.

he's just not that good.

Oh no not this again... but we just have to remember that no matter how many millions of dollars the make they are just regular guys playing a game. And NO amount of money will change that.

I know. I am saying that ... it is what he should have done.

I think that if they wanna play for the big bucks, they need to eat some crow sometimes... it is not all glory. Hellfire, for the millions they make every year, they should not expect the crowds to cheer them when they suck. IMHO, they should just learn to tune it out and not get involved. Unless someone does something violent, then they should protect themselves.

:)

i don't get it. Fans can make fun of players recently passed away parents, but players can't give them the middle finger? Our society has already downgraded to the point where elementary kids are swearing at each other. Do you really think a middle finger hurts some kids virgin eyes?

I agree. I've held this opinion for years.

Perhaps it's has something to do with "two wrongs don't make a right," but I'm just grasping here...

the news clip had it but they made his finger all fuzzy when he put his hand behind his head and flipped the bird. CBS caught it live and the commentators didnt say a thing. ;)

Same here; I never understood why he was being built up by the press as something so great when he went to Denver. He's always been mediocre.

Look on the bright side, he didn't go up into the stands and start a fight that escalated into an all-out brawl among both fans and players. COUGH*NBA*COUGH

Why should he have to apoligize? So what if he's a pro athlete, if someone says something that makes you angry, they should expect to have the favor returned. Just because the pope doesn't do it doesn't mean he shouldn't have the right or privledge to.
