jailbreaking an ipod touch

i just got a new 2nd gen ipod touch 8gb, upgrading from a 2gb 2nd gen nano so big upgrade hahaha.

anyway, firstly i realized the itouch only has 7gb free space... i guess this is normal right?... just didn't expect the OS to pick up 1 whole gb :S

ok to the meat of the question, i know jailbreaking voids the warranty, but how long is a itouch warranty normally? also, can i revert a jailbroken ipod to factory settings if i run into any trouble?

tnx

It has a 1 year warranty.

And yes, you can usually go back via a Restore, but only if you haven't completely hosed it in the first place. Realistically the only time you wouldn't be able to restore is if there's a hardware malfunction.

Unless something has changed in the past couple of weeks, a brand new touch is currently not jail-breakable.

I'm not sure why, but I fully intended to do it to mine only to find out that I couldn't.

edit: looks like they might have done it. Reading a bit more.

the OS doesn't take a gig, if you formatted an 8 gig drive, and put nothing on it you won't have 8 gigs of space. I *believe* OS 2.0 on the Touch takes about 200 megs. The rest of normal loss from formatting.

While I don't keep up on the 2G touch, unless something has happened redsn0w (the jailbreaking app for it) requires some sort of teathering to get it working. I know They're working on a regular quickpwn type Jailbreak for it, but I don't think it's quite there yet. If you mess anything up, you can restore your touch to the factory firmware and Apple would never know you had ever jailbroke it. redsn0w is what you want to look for. I just Googled and it looks like a CLI version is avilable that might not require teathering to work.

redsn0w for the 2g Touch is in beta and will out with a full GUI soon. By your GF's birthday I would imagine jailbreaking it will be a peice of cake. It's already been JB'ed it's just a matter of them finishing up the package and releasing it.
