US Stars Hail Iraq War Whistleblower

Gun appears in court tomorrow accused of breaching the Official Secrets Act by allegedly leaking details of a secret US 'dirty tricks' operation to spy on UN Security Council members in the run-up to war in Iraq last year. If found guilty, she faces two years in prison. She is an unlikely heroine and those who have met her say she would have been happy to remain in the shadows, had she not seen evidence in black and white that her Government was being asked to co-operate in an illegal operation.

Firing squad is too humane . . . I say she should be sent to Gitmo as an enemy combatant for giving comfort to the enemy. After a few months of haloperidol and social isolation, she will face a military tribunal that will punish her by sending her to serve in Iraq as a conscript. If she survives a two year tour of duty . . . then you can shoot her.

I assume the people who approved the illegal spying are also on trial, right? Surely Ashcroft is outraged by their illegal acts and is personally directing the investigation. True?

Well are such activities by the NSA really against the law? I'm sure intercepting telecommunications is illegal but we do it all the time under the guise of "national interests" so how is this case any different?
