Jagged Text etc. After Reinstall of Windows XP Home

After reinstalling Windows xp-home on my Sony Vaio pc, I found that the text, smaller graphics and rounded corners of shapes, (media player) were pixelated. I have reinstalled Windows many times before but never had this problem.
I checked all of the display settings, (smooth edges etc.) and I tried a new video card. The graphics card driver is installed, so I am really at a loss as to what the problem might be...

I don't have SP2 installed.

Monitor going bad???
Failing power supply???
Problem with the Motherboard???
Another driver that I missed???

I am currently downloading a motherboard diagnostics tool to see if that shows anything.

I would be very grateful for any insights...

Welcome to the forums.

Is this a desktop PC, or a notebook?

Also, is this on an LCD display? If so, have you got the screen resolution correct, as any non-native resolution will look horrible.

Check out this link and see if it might help.

Clear type would affect the text but wouldn't affect icons.

I've seen the icons get trashed when changing themes and such, or if running in a low-colordepth mode. Try resetting the theme to a default one and/or back. Change resolution to a highre mode/color depth and then back?
