Hey there Zap. I don't appreciate being called a troll. I would appreciate if you didn't do it again. Thank you. If you read my posts on this forum, you won't find any trollish behavior.

This is the garage. It's for car topics. This is car topic. Seriously, it's silly I have to even point this out. I'm going to move on now and pretend you didn't post this.
 
I don't own a car (probably won't for some time) but I emphatically agree with the OP. The rest of the country seems to as well - muffler shops are booming because more people are keeping cars longer and needing to replace their exhaust systems, and just yesterday I heard that the average age of the cars rescued by AAA has jumped (don't remember exact numbers).

In the past few years, the domestic automakers started producing good cars again and everyone has focused more on fuel economy and small cars in particular, but what other advancements would make someone trade in a 5 or 6 year old car? I can't think of any.
Personally, I think it's satisfying to buy something nice and keep it for a long time rather than needing to upgrade it at a hyperactive pace.

It's not like an old car has to be an appliance for hauling around a family or going from A to B either. Surely, there are plenty of older cars that are fun to drive and are inexpensive to maintain and run.

The new small cars (Focus, Impreza, Mazda 3 et al) that have come out lately might make good replacement cars for many people just because they are inexpensive, get great mileage compared to most other cars, well equipped and are quite versatile. If I were buying right now, the new Skyactiv Mazda3 hatchback looks like a fantastic car that could easily last for ten years or more.

also don't see how this thread is trolling...it makes a very good point and is applicable to the section it's posted in.

I now feel that I'm missing out on something big. Some opportunity. After all, so many things I don't care for, so little time.

Maybe I should go into Politics and News and discuss how apathetic I am, or All Things Apple to crow about how I don't own any Apple products? We don't have a religious forum here besides All Things Apple, but maybe I should find some somewhere and post about being agnostic?

I don't agree with that statement. This is still about cars, and there are several people with some level of agreement.

Besides, people do go into P&N and declare their apathy every so often. 😛
 
Most people get to this point. It's the irony of life. When you're 17 you want a performance car. But then by the time you have the money for it it's likely you've moved on and just don't care that much. I got a stunning deal on my current V6 sedan but if I hadn't I'd be driving a Camry or some other boring POS. I just have lots of other things to spend money on/care about. Until recently I was driving slower cars than I was driving many years ago when I had much less money.

Got a friend at the office who's got a Mark VIII. He's spent quite a few thousands doing restoration work on it... takes it to car shows and such in the summer ... keeps it in another friends garage for the winter ... very nice car, but it's a money pit for him...
 
Why do you have so many cars? How many cars does that other guy have? He probably has paid about the same if you add up the purchase cost and the running costs of all of your cars?

People care about different things and that is cool. Me I love training and cars.

I think what J&J was trying to say in so many words, and I'm not sure he's wrong, is that the OP sounds like he's not trying to convince us but himself.

Why would a "gearhead" (past or present) even dare to compare the first gen Ford 4.6L V8 which, in any other car (read: mustang) is considered a joke, with a state of the art BMW 4.4L? Yes, we all know a V8 is a V8. But why was the OP comparing them? Surely not because of the number of cylinders like you all imply.

Now I'm not saying I disagree with the point of the post. In fact, it's quite common when people make hobbies of appliances; when we get tired of them, then they're just appliances.

You guys all need to ease up, though.

That statement is obviously false, given the basic definition of V8. Choose your words better if you want to make an effective point. That's why people are disagreeing with you...not because we think the tech is the same.
 
Your Crown Vic may have a V8 but its not putting out 360hp. But it sounds like power is not your thing so why even shop a BMW?

I also have trouble believing your 1996 Crown Vic drives just as well as any new car you've test driven. Unless you've gone through and replaced a lot of suspension parts and bushings, that car is going to be steering sloppy, wearing tires and riding like a trampoline. Now if you HAVE gone through and done all that work to the car, then you need to count the time and labor spent keeping the car in great condition, vs buying new.

You make it sound like little to no effort or time has been wasted on this car and its in the same shape as when you drove it off the lot. Sorry but I'm calling shens on that. 90% of the reasons for buying a newer car is to avoid the major issues that start to crop up at higher mileage.

Come on jlee, you know better. Are we playing child games now? I'm sure you've heard of the term 'exaggeration'. It's a perfectly valid way of putting emphasis on how gutless of an engine we're talking about here. This is a car forum after all, so there's no need to be nit picky on generalities like 'V8'.

I can certainly understand that. But as a recent dark side new commer (congratulations), you can certainly understand that there's a reason why the OP is comparing at such a high level. All you have to do is dig a little bit to figure out we're talking 200 hp vs 400 hp. The OP is trying to convince himself, not us.

We've all been there, it's not a BAD thing. But it's just downright silly to say that the crown vic is comparable to a 550 because they, among other things, share the V8 platform.

Oh I agree entirely - like I said, my only issue is with the snide little comment regarding the invalidity of an older V8 as a V8. It still is what it is, even though it's old. 😛

Having put many, many miles on a Crown Vic, it's in a league far apart from a modern performance-biased V8.
