I was watching the news about the Virgina Tech Massacre when the anchor introduces Jack Thompson to talk about the shootings. Referring to him as an expert on school violence. HA! For those who don't know who Jack Thompson is, you are lucky. He is the man who has fought against video games and musical artists like crazy. Here is a wiki over him (I don't know if its biased b/c I did not read the entire wiki). Wikipedia - Jack Thompson
Jack Thompson says Fantasy/Fiction is not an expression of free speech and not protected by the 1st Amendment. I for one love playing violent video games because they typically have great realism and can be more enthralling. Not that a game has to be violent to be any of those things but sometimes its a necessary tool in order to make a better more entertaining piece of art/game. I see the artistic creativity in video games, but Jack Thompson does not. Video games are like interactive books, movies, and tv shows.
Now Jack Thompson is back in the media again with this latest incident at VaTech. Seems as if he blames the violent acts on video games already. He made claims that kids from schools such as Columbine played video games as training to keep heart rates down so that they could kill in real life with no problems. I don't know about you guys but seems to me that taking a life of a video game character versus taking the life of a real human, there is no comparison and I don't think with our current state of video games could ever simulate the emotion or the terror in committing such a terrible act.
Well, sorry for the poorly written rant. I just wanted to talk about it.
