jack stands/floor jack?

I think most of them are made in the same factory in China. Between Sears and Harbor Freight, everything is the same with a different name stamped on them.

They have a lock so you don't accidentally hit the release.

If you don't need aluminum and have a costco near you, for $110, you can pick up one of these.

Torque wrench, grab a 20% off coupon from harbor freight and grab one from them. I have a 1/4, 3/8 and 1/2 from them. They work well enough for me for $10-15 each.

I wouldn't trust a HF torque wrench for anything that needs to be too precise.

I wouldn't trust it for anything a torque value is specified in the manual. Cheap torque wrenches are useless. Don't ever use one for any engine internals or heads.

How precise are you talking? The click types utilize a spring, so I personally don't rely on them on the bottom or top 25% of their ratings.

I've had good enough experiences with mine next to more expensive versions that belong to friends. If I ever get into anything requiring precision, I'll take it to a good mechanic or invest in a techwrench.

I guess we need to figure out what the OP means by decent. My opinion is that harbor freight will give or take against anything on up to $100. Lets talk something you can go out and get, not those one in a lifetime deals.

Personally, nothing engine-related. I have no idea how accurate they really are, but I wouldn't risk it on anything where failure would be expensive. 😛

Most tests on the hf torque wrench compared to a craftsman shows it to be just about equal in accuracy

That about describes about when I send it off to a mechanic. 🙂 Since the wife is out of town this weekend though, I'll see how well they do. I have 2 brand new ones I picked up a few weeks ago. A 3/8 and a 1/2 I think.

Any objections to this testing method using plate weights?

I'll do it at 3 points, 25%, 50% and 75% of the rated range for both.

Well that isn't saying much since the Cratfsman torque wrenches are complete crap too. I threw both of mine away. I kept blowing head gaskets when I had never had trouble before. At first I blamed myself and the fact the the Shelby has 11:1 compression. Then the T-Bird's brand new rebuilt engine blew one with minimal driving, none of which was hard, and it only has 9.5:1 compression. It turned out to be the crappy Craftsman torque wrench which was basically brand new. Threw it in the trash along with the other one I owned. Since then I have only used a MAC and a Snap-On torque wrench to do head and no longer any problems.

I have these aluminum jackstands that say "1 year warranty" on the box. Shouldn't jackstands have 10 year+ warranties? LoL

If you actually have a true need for a torque wrench, don't skimp on it with something from HF (or Craftsman for that matter). If you're just using for lugnuts and other things that don't need greater accuracy then you'll be fine. If you're doing a headgasket, lower end rebuilds, etc then you'll want to invest in a good one.

Seriously what happened to Craftsman or Sears for that matter? They used to have the best tools. Now they just sell women's underpants.

Pretty much..

How are craftsman torque wrenches junk? Other then design, like that plastic collar that breaks. Torque wrenches are meant to be calibrated every so many years. I have a 3/8 bluepoint for some engine work. But the hf 1/2 for lugs and suspension work is more then enough. In a couple years I'll just get another one and convert that $10 old one into a 1/2 ratcheting breaker bar. Even if the wrenches were off 15% it still most likely will not cause any damage.
