Jack Russel dog..

My wife has a Jack Russel/Basenji mix.

I hate it.

Cons:
Mindless spazing much of the time.
Bossy around the other dogs (it tries to boss around our German Shepherd! LOL)
Horribly behaved at the vet (it litterally shot poop onto all 4 walls of the exam room just while getting her claws trimmed)
Ridiculously stubborn. I'm sure that dog would rather freeze to death than go into a doghouse or kennel.
Climbs and jumps badly. Could jump a 6' fence if dertermined enough.
Terrible with kids.
Uncontrollable shedding all year round.

Pros: Very loyal. Easily and reliabily housetrained. Smart (but the brains just can't overcome the spazzing). Gets along well with cats.

If I was getting a small indoor dog it would be a minitaure dauchshound. We'll never have another terrier of any kind. I hate this one.

Had a Jack and it bit someone so had to have it put down, cost me some $$ too. They are smart but very territorial. Now we have a Minature Schnauzer, no shedding and a smart little dog, so far so good.

you had to put it down for biting one person? what it do, tear someone?s face off?

If you like a dog that will be with you wherever you go then a JRT will fit the bill. If you want a dog to sit on the couch and watch tv with you, a JRT is not the dog for you. I have owned 9 JRTs since I was about 15. I am a big fan of the breed, however if they do not have a fairly large area to roam and exert energy they can be very annoying and overbearing.

I've listed my pros/cons below. I doubled up on some of them simply because it is dependant on your needs from the breed.

Pros:
Loyal
VERY Intelligent (if given the proper time investment)
Protective
VERY energetic
Has no issues with other animals already in place or newcomers who are young (puppies/kittens)

Cons:
Over-protective (they are not afraid of ANYTHING)
Sheds year-round
Requires lots of attention
Requires lots of space
Very energetic

No, it did send here to the ER and leave a scar on here leg, so I couldn't chance it happening again, it was just a liability, I was worried that next time it could be a kid and maybe bite them in the face and permanently disfigure them. Since it was on record that it had bitten someone once the second time could have gotten me into trouble because from my understanding in talking to my insurance agent, the dog would then have a "known history of biting". Just wasn't worth it.
