Ja Rule's Posse Ruckus The Strife Of P. Diddy Party

A rap rivalry erupted between the posses of Sean "P. Diddy" Combs and Ja Rule on the red carpet of Combs' celeb-studded MTV Video Music Awards after-party.

The drama unfolded when Ja Rule showed at Cipriani 42nd Street with 10 thuggish hangers-on wearing jeans and sports jerseys - a no-no at the posh party, where designer suits and evening gowns were de rigeur.

When Combs' security refused to admit Rule's shabbily dressed posse, a shoving match erupted and nearly turned into a full-scale fistfight before cooler heads prevailed, and Rule's posse agreed to leave.

Actor Ethan Hawke was turned away from the bash - modestly titled "The Greatest Party of All Time" - as was hot songbird Avril Lavigne, who later managed to beg her way in with the help of her handlers.

Justin Timberlake - fresh from his mega-hyped, and mostly lip-synched, solo performance at the awards show - showed up separately from ex-girlfriend Britney Spears.

Among the 1,500 revelers were Ed Norton and Salma Hayek, Lisa Marie Presley, Usher, Donatella Versace, Mary J. Blige, Penny Marshall, Paul Shaffer, Martin Short, Heath Ledger, Naomi Watts, Arista records chief L.A. Reid and US magazine editrix Bonnie Fuller.

Timberlake later declined to have a "dance-off" with rival popster romeo Usher, who playfully danced a circle around Timberlake before the *NSYNC hunk left the party in the wee hours of the morning.

At the Blender Magazine/Def Jam/Pony party at Cafe St. Bart, the amorous antics of Anna Kournikova and Enrique Iglesias got so steamy that Gwen Stefani, Ashanti and Kirsten Dunst began to gawk at their gropefest, forcing the couple to make a speedy exit. Christina Aguilera, LL Cool J, Johnny Knoxville, Foxy Brown, Jocelyne Wildenstein, Russell Simmons and The Hives were also at the bash.
