IYO: Are penalties for criminal acts intended as deterrence or punishment?

The sentences deter me, but apparently I'm not a criminal to begin with. But I think they don't do anything to deter those who have a mind to do such things. I believe in rehabilitation, so what do I know...

It's both. It's deterrence for those who would think about committing a criminal act and punishment for those who go ahead and do it anyway. The problem is that we don't know how well deterence works exactly because we don't get any feeedback from those who think to themselves, 'Ya know, I'm not going to do that beacuse it might very well get me a reservation in Federal PYITA Prison.'

Punishmenets are hoped to act as both, however, they are not very seldom strong enough to act as a deterent. Few, in advance, will consider the consequences of their actions if the are caught 🙁

i think they give you prison time to allow enough time for you to become "rehabilited", or come to repent your crime

I think both and the punishment should equal the crime committed......
Do away with life in prison........
