Ivy Bridge Temperature/Throttling question

Hello Fellow ATers,

Question for any 3570/3770 owners out there. Does the overclocked IVB actually throttle voltage or frequency or shut down when it reaches the reported 96-105C temperature range? I ask this just for proof that the temperature readings are indeed being accurately reported. I saw a curious comment saying "even Ivy at 100C the HSF is cool to the touch". Thanks.

The HSF would be cool to touch as the issue is heat transfer from the CPU to the cooler, not the cooler's capacity to dissipate heat. Remember, these procs are using less power, which means they are generating less heat, the problem is that they are too small to get the heat away as quickly as it is being generated and so the cpu temp is extremely high. Their ability to dissipate heat has been reduced by more than the decrease in heat generated, so the temperature goes up.

The standard intel proc reaction to over-temp is throttling though.

Don would you see if it throttles? I understand if you don't want to let the temps get that high.

Hitting temp max and throttling long enough to reduce a few degrees and then hitting it again.

I have a broken mount on my H80 which is probably skewing results.

Umm... Did you say that in the other thread? Pretty much any data you've provided is basically invalid based on that.

Probably. Its simply one of the 4 corners that is damaged. My Idle and gaming temps are good. My IBT temps are just insane.

Rasa is going on today so i'll retest

Please update the other thread ;)

They need to know the data is suspect on the temps. Proper contact is kind of a big deal (as you know).
