Allen Iverson and Jermaine O'Neal will be asked to join the 2004 U.S. Olympic men's basketball team, a source told The Associated Press on Thursday.

The decision was made in a conference call among members of the USA Basketball selection committee, a basketball source with knowledge of the selections said on condition of anonymity.

The choices of Iverson and O'Neal bring to nine the number of players who have been either selected or officially named to the team.

if he was 6'6" and could still do what he does now, he'd be better than MJ, Magic or Wilt.

He has better skills, he is quicker, he is faster. he's just a bit short. if he was kobe or Vince's height, he would totally dominate this league.

people that have read my bball posts know, i'm a kobe fan, not much of an iverson fan, but to dismiss him out of hand is ludicrous. right now as they are, i'd take kobe over iverson, but if iverson were taller?? OMFG, it's just scary how good he would be.

hey, what about Isaiah Thomas?

Isaiah > Iverson, IMO.

Actually, when i was posting i initially put that i thought Iverson was better than Isaiah, then i took it out.

Isaiah was amazing and he has 2 championships so it's hard to deny his greatness, but if i had to choose one to start a team today? i'd probably take AI. he can dominate in ways that Isaiah couldn't.

Isaiah played on a much more talented team than AI does. Isaiah played a true point guard and AI plays a Shooting Guard.

AI is MUCH MUCH better than Dumars BTW. but Isaiahs teams were pretty talented.

Isaiah, Dumars and Vinny (all three VERY GOOD GUARDS with Isaiah being an all time great). Lambier was a better Center than anyone AI has played with. Rodman was a VERY VERY good Power Forward. I don't even remember who they had at SF back then, or was Rodman SF and Oakley PF??

anyway, Detroit was pretty talented back then.

I, of course, am biased, being a Pistons fan :D

I agree completely that Isaiah had a much better team than Iverson does. But I don't necessarily agree that Iverson can dominate in ways that Isaiah couldn't. The only facet I see Iverson doing better than Thomas is, scoring. And I suspect that Isaiah could have averaged 30 ppg if he wanted to.

Regardless, I think that if Iverson was given the same opportunities that Isaiah was (i.e. a better team), he may finish his career with as many championships and accolades as Isaiah. Of course, you'd have to argue how much better Isaiah made his teammates as opposed to Iverson. As always, comparing players from different time periods who never played against each other, is very difficult.

That said, I love watching Iverson play. He always plays hard and is exciting to watch.

agreed. it is difficult to make comparisons.

it's a judgement call i guess. and i just see AI doing things on a nightly basis, that i didn't think Isaiah was capable of, BUT it could be argued that he didn't do it because his team was good enough that it wasn't necessary.

so, ya, it's hard, which came first . . . type question.

And if Iverson played defense...

Ah yes, pros in the Olympics, what a fine idea it is! Multimillionares need gold medals!

EDIT: Funny you mention Dennis Rodman. Next time say, speaking of one-dimensional basketball players.

If we want to go win in the Olympics we need Iverson, he causes some major matchup problems for those trying to cover him.

Dennis Rodman 2 time Defensive Player of the Year. I guess that is only one dimension.

let's see, AI had 5 steals in last nights game. D??

AI is in a tight spot tho, he really is too small to guard most SG in the League, Kobe, TMac, Vince etc. it's not that he WON'T play D against them, it's that physically he is just too small.

for the 76ers that works out OK cause Snow is better to D the SG than AI and AI can guard most PG in the league.

Isaiah made all his teammates better, then they really should have been. Has anyone on the Sixers improved because of Iverson? I tend to think not. Iverson is the better individual player. Isaiah was the better team player.

If I had to start a team around one player... Carmello :D Great team and individual player. Lebron who?

well you could argue that Eric Snow is better because of Iverson.

Being a Sixers fan, I'd have to say I'm biased as well... AI is better than Isiah Thomas IMO... I think he's quicker, is as much of a team leader or more than I.T., and gets to the free throw line more. Yeah, Kobe's great now, but he couldn't guard AI in the finals a couple years back, they had to get Tyrone Lue to get the job done. The man is the quickest player in the game, and destroys his opponents with that first step off the dribble and on D. There's a reason he's avg'd close to 3 steals/game for his CAREER, who said he doesn't play D?! He just set the all time Philly record for steals for Christ's sake...

If I remember correctly, I calculated that AI, on avg, got to the free throw line like 15 times a night over his career! Correct me if I'm wrong, I crunched these numbers about 6 months back. Kobe can't compete with that (I think Kobe was around 10-11), although Kobe does rebound better and has a higher FG%... different positions on different teams contribute alot to those figures.

Pound for pound nobody is as talented as AI at the SG position, I can't believe that Mike Bibby made the O team before AI... I think many people just hate on him b/c he doesn't "conform" to societal norms. :D

not to nitpick but they are the same position on different teams (kobe and AI i mean). Kobe plays SG.

Kobe's game last night will be pretty much what he'll do the rest of his career. well, mb not as many steals, but he had 34 pts, 7 rb, 6 assists and 5 steals. that's a pretty strong overall game.

Why hasn't Steve Francis been asked to join the Olympic team? He is the most dynamic point guard out there.

but in the past he's gambled too much. i dunno about now. i think he more than deserves a spot on the olympic team though.
and BTW... to the person who said >6'3"... shouldn't it be <6'3"? just to clarify?
