basketball players taking beatings? that's news to me.

Anyone that says basketball isn't a contact sport hasn't played basketball. Yes, the chance of career ending injuries are lower than in football, but the actual number of injuries are much higher.

Serious ankle sprains, ACL tears/sprains, broken wrists/hands, back injuries from landing on the floor, ect.

It's obviously not the same type of impacts that you'll see in the NFL, but to say that basketball players aren't succeptable to injuries and "taking a beating" is simply naive. These guys are running up and down a court for 30+ minutes a night 80-100 nights a year..plus practices. The jumping, the landing, the occasional elbow to the face, the under the basket collision, ect. It wears on you over the course of time.
BS.

If it were a contact sport, they wouldn't make such a big deal of it when they catch a finger across the arm. Nor, would the sportscasters be so eager to praise them for "hustling" or diving after a loose ball. Name me one other ball sport where running to the ball is even noted as hustle - it's just what an athlete is supposed to do.

Modern pro basketball players are a bunch of girlie-men. I wish they'd go back to the days when only REAL fouls were called.

Elton Brand is off to a good start but lets see if he can sustain it.

I still don't think he is consistent enough on the offensive end to carry the team.

Yes, I know he's in the top 10 in the league in scoring, but of the few games I've watched him play, his offensive moves are clumsy, jump shot was suspect and disappeared when it mattered the most.
He's got good numbers of paper, especially rebounding and defense, but I don't think he's clutch.

You need a courtside seat, my friend. Basketball, as played by Americans, is indeed a contact sport. We turn everything we play into a contact sport.

I actually had 4th row seats at the Staples Center last night watching Kobe do the Mavs Eagle, Colorado style.

I've seen it up close and I know they are a bunch of sissies. My love of the game doesn't blind me to this fact.
