I've started drinking about 1/2 a gallon of 2% milk a day...is that too much?

as the title says...i've started *trying* to eat right by eliminating as much sugar as i can. I've cut out all sweets (i used to drink about a gallon of gatorade a day and some pop at night) and eating as many meats and veggies that i can. My mom says it's probably not healthy to drink that much milk...is she right?

I'd switch over to skim milk if I were you. That's A LOT of unnecessary calories, fat, and cholesterol that you are consuming. You would be much better off just drinking water and getting your calcium through other means.

You do realize that's like 1500 calories, nearly 350 of those calories being fat, don't you?

I average a quart and a half of whole milk every day. No adverse health problems, and I'm not gaining any weight.

Nah keep doing that for the next three months, then with the added calcium to your diet let me know what size the kidney stone is you will eventually pass.

Yes, I would say it's too much. Milk isn't exactly the most healthy thing on the planet you can drink, dispite what the dairy industry would like you to believe.

The main problem with milk is that it's full of hormones and antibiotics. If you're going to drink milk, and your worried about your health, I highly suggest that you switch over to Organic milk.

And if you really want to do your body good, drink soy milk. Yes, it sounds nasty. Yes, there are certainly some nasty brands out there. No, you can't really compare it to cows milk.. If you do, you will be disappointed.

However, you get used to it very quickly... as long as you find a good one. Trader Joe's soy milk in the little square containers is the best I've found so far, but its kinda expensive. Get a vanilla kind, and try a few different brands. Regular flavor is almost always pretty nasty. But the vanilla flavors compliment things like cereal very well... I drink probably a quart of soy milk a day..

It is very, very good for you.

My dad has had 2 kidney stones. After the first he followed all the diet guidelines. After the second he asked the doctor about it. The doctor's reply was something to the effect of, "Well, we found out that it's not dietary. If you are genetically predisposed to get stones, you get stones no matter what you eat, and if you're not predisposed to get stones, you don't get them." My dad was not really happy at all about changing his diet around all to no effect. The point here is that the diet and kidney stone connection is vastly overstated. Just like the relationship between stress and ulcers, the real reason for ulcers is a certain form of bacterium.

You're trying to eliminate sugar and you're drinking a half gallon of milk a day? Ever heard of Lactose? (Milk Sugar)

As stupid as it sounds, i honestly didn't know that there was sugar in milk, let alone a good majority.

Well there is nothing 'wrong' with it par se, however it can cause your skin to break out. I drink about a litre of milk each day and I've drank milk since I was a wee little kid, and I've been bashed and knocked around and I've never broken a bone.

cut it down to a quart and drink more water. A lot more water than the quart of milk you'll be missing. Like Eli said, I wouldn't worry about the fat/calorie content of the milk so much as I would the chemicals and antibiotics that are in it. The human body is designed to have a certain percentage of its calories coming in as fat. It's a lot better for you to be getting those 1500 calories as 25% fat calories than for you to drink gatorade and get those same calories as pure sugar.

i used to drink a quart of whole milk for lunch everyday. didnt make me fat or gain weight or anything.

was damned tasty too

Everyday, yes, it would be excessive. Like any other thing in life, excess food is harmful. Moderation is the key thing. Cut down on your milk in-take. Additionally, try not to drink it everyday.

I remember when we drank whole milk a lot and everyday. It was fun for that period. But if we continued along that path, something was likely to happen. Again, ask yourself if you're eating in moderation.

LOL! Wouldn't that award go to you for just having the above quote with a colon? All right! I'll take the award, as it gives me the honourable lawyer title. Feel free to contact me if you need an attorney in personal injury and criminal litigations. ;)

I would say thats a little too much.... ;)
Keep it around 2-3 glasses that should be enough.
Drink water instead.
Soy milk is good but I think its an acquired taste.
You might want to get the extra calories from veggies and chicken.
How old are you btw? Cuz if you are still growing milk is good but not
a half gallon ;)
