I've been wondering about this for a while and thought it would make a good OT topic, no matter how weird/disgusting.
What the hell is wrong with my dog? She's an indoor dog, and when she scratches at the door I always let her out and I go out with her (In spite, the neighbors got her taken by the pound once so I have to accompany her).
Every now and then I let her out a few minutes before I go out and that is the only opportunity she could have to take a dump without me seeing her. Is she purposely avoiding me seeing "the act" or something? Could it be a remnant of her original training not to crap on the floor? She could have misinterpreted me snapping at her and putting her outside as an indication that I should never see her crapping at all or she gets punished, but she doesn't crap inside while I'm away so that idea doesn't totally pan out.
The only time I saw her crap outside was summer of 2002 when she went in heat for the first time. I hadn't had her fixed yet because I thought she was still a puppy (She looks like a larger breed). She's fixed now, but before that time she was free to go in and out as she pleased and all of a sudden I could not allow her to venture out alone lest the male strays "get lucky" (And they were constantly ALL OVER the yard!). She ran off into the woods with the strays while I was running to catch her and when I caught up she was taking a crap. That's it. I admit, I work a lot and I'm hardly ever home but no one in my family has ever witnessed the event again and they are equally as puzzled. Later, I moved to a place with a fenced in back yard where she could run around with the land-lady's dog and crap all she wanted to but I still never saw her. The land-lady's dog had no problem taking craps all over my room. Often.
I assume she eats enough. She always eats the treats I give her and my mother keeps the water and food bowls full. If she eats, she craps. Right? I mean; no mystery there.
Oh, and she urinates frequently enough. It may be that whole giant container of raisins she got into as a puppy (Raisins/grapes can kill a dog and ruin their kidneys).
