Ive never bought a car from a dealer or anything, need suggestions...

Well the car insurance place called and my car is indeed totalled. I hear that getting from individuals is cheaper but getting one from a dealer might have some sort of warranty. I am not sure how much my check will be for but i am guessing around 5k-7k. I dont want a brand new car but a car that might last me a while and look halfway decent. Honda would be my first choice.
Thanks for any thoughts....

check out carmax (or online at carmax.com )

or get a friend/relative that is a wheeler/dealer to buy one for you

i got my brother-in-law to help my wife buy her mini-van, he is one of those that always gets the best price from those snake used car salespeople

At that price you're basically not going to have a warranty of any significance. Maybe 30 days sort of thing from a place, but carmax and places like it infrequently have cars worth as little as that, so you won't qualify for their standard warranties.

So i might be better off getting a car from a person rather than dealership?

EBAY!!! I bought a 1993 Jeep Cherokee Sport from Ebay about 7 months ago for $2500. 100K miles and ran perfectly. Would have lasted a lot longer if I didnt drive into a tree 45mph trying to drive through a big puddle....

I was checkin out ebay, since i dont have a car now i could just fly out to whereever and drive it home...... I dunno yet....

If you're a AAA member, you can go ask them about a certain car, and they'll recommend a particular dealer and salesperson who'll sell it to you for invoice without spending two hours to negotiate.

I am sure you could find some "certified used car" within your price range, but meh.

Since it sounds like you aren't really in a rush, keep your eye open for a good deal.. anywhere really.

Try and find a one owner car where the owner has all maintenance receipts. 🙂

Ya, I would rather pay cash for it, i have some money saved up but i just dont want to have car payments even though it would mean a better car.....

I do plan on taking my time to shop around...

What exactly are you looking for in a car? SUV? Compact? Options? Features? Performance?

I was hoping to find a honda civic with my price range with as little miles as possible... Or another car like that, that is dependable.

Don't. Buying a used car from a dealer is just throwing away your money. Check the classified ads in the newspaper, check autotrader, check ebay, check other local postings.

I think you can do much better than a Honda Civic for 6-7k.....Im telling you man, you'd be surprised what you can find on ebay. Some options...Acura CL, Lexus ES...they'll last you a long time.

Don't just consider Hondas. Take a look at the domestics. Used domestic cars have some really good values. Quite often you can get a lower mileage domestic with more equipment and an extended warranty for less than a Honda. Just as an example only a 2000 Honda Accord LX Sedan with 60k miles goes for $12 - $13K. A 2001 Chevy Malibu LS with about 40k miles goes for $9 - $10K.
You end up with a car that is newer, has less miles, has more equipment, and still have about 3 grand left over for any repairs. I rather doubt that a Malibu will need $3k more in repairs than an Accord over it's life.

I agree, buying an import might be a smart move if you are purchasing a brand new car, but domestics are a much better value when you buy them used.

I got a killer deal on my used Taurus where a comparable import would have been probably over twice the price I paid.
