I've never been in a car accident before until this morning.

I don't know who's fault it was.. I was pretty much backing out and hit the front of a car passing by on the wrong lane.
Anyways... he was real cool about it.. maybe because he knew it was his fault,,, i think I might've acted too nicely.
We decided not to take any action or get the police involved in this..... we exchanged phone numbers.. and he also took down my insurance place. It was his girlfriend's car... and just wanted to get my contact info "just in case" or something like that. He assured me that he wasn't going to call the police or the insurance place.... i guess he wanted to feel comfortable that he had my info.
it was a minor car accident.. which should serve as a lesson in case I get into a serious one in my future.
the only damage was my rear had some white scratches, not too noticeable.. and his front light got busted and left some scratches.

What do you guys think of all this?
you think he is going to pull some slick sh!t and take action?
should I not worry about it or do something about it?

obviously, I don't have the police report so it's too late now to do anything... the only thing i'm concerned about is if he is going to do take some sort of action and try to blame me.

I didn't want to be assertive and try to make money off him.. maybe I should've.

😕

what do you guys think?
anything I should know for future reference?

thanks AT

Why does everyone say call the police? Most of the time they are too busy to deal with your non-injury minor accident. Take down information, go to the local station, make the report there.

Maybe because alot of insurance companies tell you to.

did you get his information?

yeah looks like he got your info, but did you get his, he could come back in a week and say that you hit him, and you would have no proof of what happened, and always i mean always get police or at least call your insurance agent, so they have time and dated copy of what happened. its your first one, but still my first accident i got al the info and everything. Just be carefull next time

The idiots here in Louisiana immediately get out of there cars after an accident and start calling home to mommy I guess. In the middle of the busy fvcking city!!!
Not out near the bayou, I mean they do not move the cars off to the side of fvcking road or even to a parking lot. They sit there in the middle of the road and block traffic for hours, especially irritating for minor fender benders.
wow I feel better now😀

we basically got the same info (phone numbers)... except he got my insurance place's phone number on top of that (that bastard)
I don't think he is going to do anything about it. I can only pray that he just lets it go and move on. Damn, I'm pretty sure he has more important things to worry about... HOPEFULLY😕

If I've learned anything from all these accident threads, it's to call the police for an official report. BUT, does that mean you must contact insurance afterward ? Or can you just use that filed report as a safeguard ?

Shouldn't you have gotten his insurance info instead (if any of this were to be exchanged) if you believe he was at fault ? This is starting to sound bad.

i think if youre the one backing out youre the one that is usually at fault.

Yup... hope this guy doesn't pursue it, because you will be found at fault. Cars going forward have the right of way, wrong lane or not, backing out you are automatically screwed.

If you're swapping insurance info, definately call the police. I had a friend get her insurance dropped because a guy she hit in a minor fender bender milked the insurance company over an "injury". Since the cops weren't called, there's no record and no proof.

but why always get the police involved? it's so much hassle.. maybe I'm just a simple person, i hate my life being crowded with complicated crap.

I just need to just avoid accidents completely. Even though it is unavoidable at times...
I need to try to drive less

well then I'm glad we didn't call the cops and getting a police report

How can you back out and hit him, yet it's his fault? It sounds like it's 100% your fault.

ALWAYS call the police just so there can be a record of what happened. He could have ran straight to the police station after he left and claimed it was a hit and run. You would be screwed.

I think if its less then $500 worth of damage it is ok not to tell insurance/police if you want to make a private setllement.

What is to stop the other guy from filing a report without your knowledge? He has your name, insurance information, and probably your license plate number.

what about eye witnesses?

can they be used or is the office police report the only thing that matters?

this took place inside a parking garage... the garage was pretty backed up with cars waiting in a line to find a spot
I get in my car.. look to the right side to make sure no cars were coming, I take a glimpse to the left but it's backed up so I figured no cars would be coming from that way.... what this guy did was try to go around the waiting cars in the wrong lane
I started backing up, then we collided.
