Sorry to go radio silent after the first post. BetMGM isn't the only one. Our media has been hit hard by Draft Kings and a bunch of others in recent months too. All of them have been offering the introductory offers to hook people. I suppose I just feel like Jaime Foxx is acting all cool and targeting the black community to siphon money from them. Like I say, I wonder who else they would have picked if he'd turned them down.

Norm MacDonald can tell you how bad sports gambling can be. Those with gambling addiction almost always get stuck on sports. I'm smart enough to know there's no such thing as a sure thing and the parlay crap they sell is ridiculous.

I mean - what celebrity can you think of that doesn't do one of the following:

-Cheesy unfunny and dumb commercials
-Commercials/Marketing that target other addictive items like alcohol or fast food
-Social Media marketing where they act like they actually use the products
-Selling Fyre festival

Just about every celebrity is a piece of shit that has a price.

I know what you're saying. I suppose I just thought he was classier than that. He's got serious talent, so I'm dissappoint.

What has he done for you lately? I know that he had a FOX show with his daughter, but I don't know if it got canceled. He's got bills to pay, like anyone else.

Just because he's rich, doesn't mean he lives within his means. Hollywood is full of broke actors & actresses.
The story I always remember best is MC Hammer.
He made a shitload of money his best year and bought a giant house in Beverly Hills. Between taxes, paying his manager, agent, and publicist, and wild parties, he lost it all. I saw in an interview he was saying he'd do it all over again, the exact same way, no regrets.

I thought he must be a special kind of moron. With 30 million dollars you could invest wisely and be set up like a king for life.
Fuckin dick head.

But he's MC Hammer! The music he wrote for "Can't Touch This" was amazing and catchy...he's got tons of talent. I'm sure he'll be "back on top" on a reality tv show with Vanilla Ice and Flava Flav as soon as the pandemic is over.

wow what respect do i have for anyone in general. None, what respect do i have for millionaire actors>? possibly even less than none! who cares what they do? i dont even watch commercials unless im paid to do so at work. are actors your role models or something?

I can respect people who are good at their jobs.

I even respect Tom Cruise (grudgingly, because I dislike him intensely for acting as a kind of public face of a cult, but despite that I've come to think I can't really knock him for how whole-heartedly he throws himself into what he does for a living).

There's something about someone being able to intensely focus at a task and get it done well that I can't help but feel some kind of respect for. Heck, never mind Tom Cruise, I read about Lee Harvey Oswold not long ago and found myself feeling the same thing.

Anyway, gambling is a really difficult issue, I feel, like all forms of self-harming behaviour. And it gets even more complicated because it's pretty much impossible to get through life without gambling, the nature of life forces you to do it (do I quit this job for a better one? do I buy a home or continue to rent?). But endorsing those sleazy gaming corporations for money is pretty clearly an ethical failing, so I agree with the OP on that.

I find it strange to kind of single out Jamie Foxx. He's just a dude. Not sure why you put him on a pedestal.

That being said, he's definitely talented. But he's just some guy.

I suppose it's because he was so good in the commercial (looking badass and cool) and BetMGM has been paying to air it frequently on all my streaming services. Like I said, my concern is that he's going to convince people that don't need to be gambling with the little money they have and their families will pay the price. Those apps are way more dangerous than Vegas ever thought about being because they remove the physical barriers and access restrictions.

One can't say if he put Jaime Foxx on a pedestal or not. Nothing in this thread indicates that. Maybe he just respected him as an actor and a talent and the roles he chose.

Celebrities can have outsized influence on people, seems like he is just calling him out for using that influential power to endorse something he feels should not get advertised in such a manner. That's all.

People are really over reading into this guy's post.

While we're on Jamie Foxx... is it me or does he have a sneaky/shifty face? Not just his face, but his whole personality (that famous Comedy Central's roast where he destroyed a fellow, lesser-known comic).

I don't know. He doesn't come across as someone that I'd naturally trust. He's got that self-important swagger and carries 'I got so much to prove' energy.

I mean I don't see that when I look at someone like John Cena (holds highest record for Make-A-Wish grants to sick kids).

I never had respect for Jamie Fox. Why should we have respect (in particular) for any entertainer who merely found their niche and had talent? Everyone is talented at something, no extra respect warranted for becoming rich or famous if not for doing something contributory to human welfare. Maybe he has, but since I don't know of it... really don't follow celebrities.

I saw his interview with Jerry Seinfeld on an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. He seemed like a fairly down to earth guy and it was a fun chat. He talks about trying to stay humble and such.

I don't need or want celebrities/athletics/actors/etc. to tell me what to buy or what is good for me.

A lot of people do not know that there are many commercials with American actors/celebrities/athletics only air/print oversea and not US market.

Do Harvey Keitel and Kevin Bacon advertise car-insurance and mobile-phone shops respectively in the US or do they only do it here? Was bemused to see such high-profile 'big name' Hollywood types in such downmarket, extremely mundane advertiising campaigns. Doesn't feel so much like an ethical issue, as with promoting gambling, but just seems surprisingly lacking in Hollywood glamour. What next? Will Denzel Washington pop up advertising washing powder? Or Meryl Streep start pushing payday loans?

I just saw Bacon in some ad. I fast forward through it so I don’t know what it was for.

His net worth is somewhere north of $100 million. I don't think he needs the job to pay the bills :D

Every actor or celebrity is on a time limit of value. What they are worth right now doesn't mean a whole lot, because that well can instantly dry up at a moment's notice. You think they have control over their perceived value in the market, but they really don't. If the studios start souring on you--say the take at the box office for your work starts dropping consistently, despite profiting and for any reason, you could get dumped for the new hotness.

There isn't an actor that doesn't promote stuff. All of them do it. It's actually their job. They've always been gig workers.

Also, the hilarious bickering in this thread could have been resolved if OP replaced "promote" with "support." He meant to say promote--two words with specifically different meanings that sounds similar. You can promote something without supporting it. (that isn't very typical of celebrity promoters, though--some do take that seriously--but is typical of famous scumbags, like Donald Trump)
