did you use an extension cord?
using one that is too thin for the load would cause the motor to burn up.

Nope. Right into the outlet. FWIW, it's not a three-prong cord.

Taking a quarter inch off with an orbital sander is, as others have pointed out, using the wrong tool for the job.

Use a table saw or a band saw.

A table saw is a bad enough idea but a band saw??? 😕

LOL. With a plane you can take a little off till its right. A saw will make it look nasty as hell and you have a much better chance of taking to much off and ruining your door.

Unless the plane is on a treadmill - because it will just take off. 😛

Yadda, yadda, yada, go rent a power plane.

A 1/4 inch is a ton to take off a door. What has moved and why seem like bigger questions. If the entire house is settling because of some problem you might be better served to figure that out before you start removing stock or you'll be doing all the doors and windows and looking like you're living in the "Fun House" at the circus.
