I was playing a game and the computer froze...

I tried restarting but that didn't do it.

I turned it off and then used the regular power button to turn it back on. NOTHING came up on the screen. The only things that had any evidence of life was all the fans spinning, the NIC card green light and the dvd rom I could open.

All my hardware is quality stuff including a 300watt Antec PS.

I pulled all the plugs off the HD's and CDroms as well as tried removing the Video card and memory... every vital component... still didnt boot at all.

I have an MSI 6330 Socket A mobo... with the D-LED lights... they were all red. It said either the CPU or the CMOS battery. Well, I replaced the CPU and that didnt do anything (unless I broke that one too but I dought it)... and replaced the battery but that still didn't do anything.

Could it possibly be the motherboard even though I can turn the power on (but the restart button doesnt work) the fans work... cpu fan that is plugged into the mobo even. and the DVDrom drive and NIC card lights...

So it seems like power is going through...

Any ideas? I'm suspecting motherboard... not sure what else :(. It's a good mobo, I don't understand how it happened... I didn't bump the case or anything... it also has been running fine for 6 months. Perhaps because it doenst seem to respond to resetting (I tried hitting the reset button when the game froze and it didnt do anything) that it could be the motherboard?

Oh, and I sure hope that it didn't kill anything like the ram or hard drives or video card... would it?

Thnx

You probably already tried this, but for gee wiz, unplug the power cord from the power supply and wait about five minutes. Probably won't work, but you did everything else.

Oh yeah, it's been unplugged for longer than that...

I dont get it, I was playing a game and then poof.

This time I need to know for sure what is wrong, and now I'm pretty sure it's got to be the mobo... I think.

Im not sure if you have done this, but well you might..
Have you cleared the cmos? Look in the manual and you will find a jumper or something similar.

Yep monitor works fine and did the CMOS thing

I just put the ram and one of the HD's into another computer and those work fine.

I'm still guessing mobo, just not sure why I can power it up (but can't restart using the button) and the fans work as well as the NIC light.

Were you using a surge protector??

I have an MSI mobo...when all the lights are RED that means that power is coming into the Motherboard, but it fails to start the boot sequence. There has got to be a short somewhere. Check the CPU, battery, memory. Remove all your cards (PCI/ISA/AGP) and see if the lights still stay red.

If this doesn't work, take everything out of the case, and re-seat the motherboard. Disconnect all the drives as well. Replug in each component card and drive one by one until you find the culprit...if this doesn't work, consider plugging into a different power supply.

Ok, I sorta did that already

It's an ANTEC Power Supply though... and all the fans run and everything.

Memory works fine, everything else works fine as far as I can tell.

I hope it wasn't the CPU and I just like broke another one... When I put the Duron on and moved it sideways slightly it made sorta a grinding noise... very slight, but that was probably the metal against the padding or the heatsink paste or something, the chip loooked out and so did the previous one.

Those heatsinks are really hard to get on.

If it was the motherboard, which is seems to be, is it possible it could have died, yet I am able to have things powered on it such as the LAN card and the fans and the power button?

What about the reset button? That doesn't seem to work...

Thnx

have u tried a different video card?
ALso you mentioned "grinding" when installing the cpu and hsf... u may have damaged the core of the chip. You said you tested the CPU in another motherboard tho right? hmmm i dunno man

Um, I just checked the CPU

adn the chip on top there is a small corner that is like grinded away...

How did that happen?!

Would the CPU be useless if ANY part of that chip on top was noticeably damaged?

If so, then it could have indeed been just the CPU, I just happen to dmg this one in the process of fixing the original :)

Or it still could be the motherboard, the original was maybe truely bad, but no I can't tell because this CPU is dmg :).

Either case, I called both companies, and I am getting a better replacement mobo if I return this one, and a Tbird 850 cpu if I return the duron... I think I have to pay the price difference.

I failed to mention to them the noticeably dmged Duron however :).

Anyway... wish me luck plz

If I get bother parts, and they dont charge me much, and it still doesn't work... I'm going to give all my computer things away, and move to some little village in Africa :).

actually that happens to me often. my mobo seems to hate every kind of ram i throw at it. so i kept reseating my memory till it posted. try tearing your computer apart and rebuilding it from scratch. that might work too for some odd reason. worked for me twice.
