I've just about had it with SETI!

This bandwidth thing is ready to kill this project for me. I've even been trying public ques and they hang on "getting data" just as bad as berekely. It may just be time for me to move on to a project that actually works like it's supposed to! Enough!

I can see how you can get frustrated because you are having problems volenteering your computer.
But, getting angry with them. I don't understand that. It is not a service you are buying or using. You are the one providing the service to them. 😕

The first time you try a new public queue or add a new architecture, it'll hang as bad as Berkeley because it has no WUs queued. Check your queues on those sites now; they may have a few WUs ready for you.

Hopefully I can get some workunits soon because I am almost out. Plus I just added a new XP1600+ to my fleet and I need workunits for it.

What Ken_g6 said - when I first tried using a public queue I also was completely ignorant of the necessity for the operator of that queue to move units specifically into an area for me! 😱

Since I'd set up my own queue at home, I'd never had to do anything like that and didn't realize that it's apparently different with multiple users from other IP ranges connecting to a public queue.

Definitely try checking back with the operators of those queues - maybe send 'em a PM saying that you'd like to be set up as a user - all of the operators of the TA SetiQ's have been very helpful in that regard. 🙂

In regard to JetsFanatic, yes, I see your point.. and the same arguement should be equally applied to the free email and web-hosting that's offered to the public thru varous companies; this is a particularly sensitive issue for me, as I get complaints from the public(library patrons) about problems accessing their free email accounts thru public Internet terminals in our branches and that it's somehow my fault, when service is slow or a server at Yahoo(for example) is down. I think "Hey! It's free - what do you expect?!?" It's that kind of thing that'll eventually make me go postal! :disgust:

badthad,

I think we all suffer from the same feeling, it gets even worse once you become a stats-aholic. Withdrawals are a nightmare, I would even consider going to the dentist to get my mind focused on something else. Not long after I first joined AT, we suffered a big down time. Shortly thereafter, I set up my own setiqueue pointing at another queue. I now keep 14 days on hand at home. I have lost my entire queue once when the drive crashed, now that is real painful. I would recommend you try setting up your own queue. I at least have local stats all the time and I have it as the start page on every machine in the house. There is nothing quite like the feeling of going room to room and still seeing your stats. Now if there was just some way to animate them. I am determined to make 10K, then I am going to shift some (notice I said some, not all) machines to a cancer project (lost my dad and a few good friends that way).

If you need any help setting it up, just holler!

How'd that "serenity prayer" go again.. oh, yeah:

"God, grant me Serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and Wisdom to hide the bodies of the people I had to kill because they pissed me off!" 😀

Everyone is welcome to take WU's from my queue.... as I am not doing seti for the time being and I want to empty the queue out.....
I have it set not to download any more wu's, just need to get rid of the ones in it
the info is
seti.deception.net port 5517
PM me or AIM me at s/n zeruty after you submit 1 wu and I'll transfer you over a nice big load of wu's

or I can zip a bunch of the files... from setiqueue or setidriver, and put them up on the web for whoever wants em
if anyone needs em, let me know

Yes, I miss the day when a wu uploaded in a second or two. Now it takes 4 or 5 hours to upload 40 :|

The easiest way to get around this bandwidth thing is set up your own local SetiQ. I know we all sound like a broken record but *none* of my clients are waiting for WU's because I've got a 5-6 day backlog of WU's in the local SetiQ's. Hmmm... Speaking of that, I'll have to check my settings. At 145-150 WU's per day I think I need more than 800 WU's in the queue.

Just checked. Mine has uploaded all but 7 WU's so maybe Berkeley is working again?

I have some news on the 100 meg pipe that Assimulator1 and others now hearing are waiting for timeline. Can't quite start a countdown clock yet so hang in there on the many queues that people have set up, the queues have seemed to help keep the flow leveled off and smoothed out some it appears, great job everyone. You have managed to "Distribute the Distributed Computing" 🙂
I'll post more of what I can when I get the go ahead.

Edited to get rid of red angry face ( didn't realize that was checked). Also the Internet is comprised of a few gazillion connections here and there, some fast some slow and everything in between, it is obviously not the Holy Grail, yet , that people piped it up to be.

A lot of you seemed to have missed the point of my post. I have all the wu's I need! I have that under control and all my machines are crunching. The point is I donate MY TIME and MY RESOURCES to this project. I expect to be able to upload/download wu's without wondering if it's going to work or how long it's going to take to complete. No other DC projects have the ridiculous problems that the SETI project has....end of story.

/me soothes poor badthad... 🙂

No other DC projects have the ridiculous problems that the SETI project has....end of story.

Oh boy... then you may not want to run the Stanford projects like F@H... 😉

Yeah... it has been slow since over the weekend. Thing is, this SETI thing goes through a feast and famine cycle. We happen to be in the famine mode right now... 🙁 Hopefully it'll all get worked out soon. But even with the extra bandwidth, I really would like them to try to work on some mirroring - especially for stats, since alot of folks are running it remotely and aside from getting that fix, it's the only way many people have to confirm whether the remote boxen are actually still up and running it.

<No other DC projects have the ridiculous problems that the SETI project has....end of story. >

And you'd better not run RC5 or OGR. DNet has had serious problems with stats & servers before too. I remember days without stats updates. Or how about having to re-crunch work because of a major foul-up? I believe that happened with one of the DNET projects, and some suspect it may happen with RC5. Not good for us statsaholics. :Q

The point is SETI isn't only DC project to have problems from time to time.

I know it is frustrating, irritating, and downright painful. But if you have plenty of WUs, take a break, let em crunch and go find something else to do to take your mind off if it. 🙂

It's going to be a nice day here, and if I wasn't working I would be out and about. 🙂

badthad,
I gave up on Seti after Seti running on my second machine died. It happend just after I hit 500 WU's.
My first rig I had already turned over to ECCP because Seti died then on restart downloaded a new client but then refused to connect because it could not verify the user name.

I have been running ECCP now for a couple of weeks and am much happier.

Also ECCP supports Linux much better than Seti does. And there is an Optimized client (Thanks MereMortal!!!).

I'll pass the 5000 DP Mile Mark today.

After ECCP end's I'll be looking for anohter project that also encourages Linux clients.

Ray - I was on the RC5 TeAm for quite awhile bro. I have close to a 1 million blocks, but gave up because of DNET stance on the DMcOwen fiasco. I do remember DNET having problems with stats, but I don't recall ever having a problem getting and sending work. I can do without stats (for a short period anyway, LOL) but I can't do without the smooth flow of work units....that's the part that fires me up.

badthad: Don't forget that SETI is by far the largest DC project out there. When it bogs down for whatever reason the amount of users attempting to UL/DL work pile up quickly. Hopefully the additional bandwidth (coming soon) will solve some if not all of our problems.

It would be sad day if an old SETI comrade like yourself was to give up,it wouldn't seem the same without you🙁
If your Queues are set with a 5day minimium then you should be able to ride out any outages ,I hope you have enough🙂
Btw do you have to manually connect your Q?
Also it would be a shame if you quitt when SETI are in the process of sorting a 100Meg pipeline (funding is sorted) ,check out DaveMc Cowens thread for more info.

I hope you stay with us mate............

assim 1 - Thanks man! I'm going to hang with it on the premise of the 100 mb pipe coming. If it doesn't improve after that, I'm moving on to another TA DC project. Don't worry, my wu's will stay with the TeAm. 🙂

I have about a 7 day buffer in my seti driver caches. That's the biggest pain for me. I have to go around to my home PC's and manually dump the caches. Each PC must be individually logged in to my ISP so I can't autotransmit. Can't use setiQ because of my router, each PC has a dymanic IP assigned....amongst various other issues.
