I've installed Mandrake, and...

I hate to say it, but I think it sucks. Took me long enough to even get the damn OS installed (still doesn't work correctly, I get an error when trying to boot to LILO, I have to use a BootDisk) and now I'm in it and I'm thoroughly dissapointed.

This "konqueror" browser is awful, and I can't figure out how to get Mozilla installed. May I ask why, by default, is the TEXT SIZE SO DAMNED SMALL??? I can't even read the README file in the Mozilla tarball!

I'm so tempted to just go back to Windows2000. Someone please convince me why I shouldn't. :|

Yes masah! If you do not like konquerer, use a different browser. Netscape, opera, (mozilla download the rpm from the ftp server), use lynx. Reread the install docs if you screwed it up once. run lilo and see what happens. What errors do you get? What else can we do to make you happy sir?

I got an error something like Error Loading Operating System...go figure. And I'm trying to install Mozilla right now, as I said, I can't even read the Mozilla docs because the fontsize on the default text viewer is tiny and there seems to be no setting to enlarge it.

I hope something good comes of this. :frown:

What does your lilo.conf look like? Rerun lilo and see what happens. Try using more as your default text viewer. Deffinately beats the pants off of any X software. Oops I used the CLI language again. DELETE THIS POST!

Koni: I think that text problem you see is something that everyone sees and is an unavoidable thing that hurts the os. You see in windows you've got your pretty true type fonts that ms licenses out to you. Linux can't install them, but you can make it use your windows fonts. go here, follow the procedure and tell me if its not better!

Whats the error on boot, someone more familiar with boot problems may help. What file of mozilla did you get? I can wlak you through installing it.

MS actually has a bunch of True Type Fonts that are free (beer). I use them on my OpenBSD system. But if these are Mozilla docs they should be written for linux.

Turns out I already had Mozilla installed (go figure -- not that it's that much better than "Konqueror&quot😉. The error I got was "Error Loading Operating System" and then it just reboots like it didn't find a bootable disk. Not to mention the fact that for whatever reason Windows wouldn't install, saying that it "couldn't find a Windows 2000 compatible partition" even AFTER I let the Windows installer partition my disk however it pleased.

If you still have it, lets see the lilo.conf file. Try running /sbin/lilo (might be the wrong path type: "which lilo" to find out) and see what happens.

Hmm...could this mean maybe there IS NO LILO on my system? Why do I hate this so much ALREADY?

which: no lilo in (/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/usr/games)

Nope, your path does not include /bin and /sbin. Try " ls /sbin/lilo"
"ls /bin/lilo"

konichiwa - Fortunately my first experience was a good one. Mandrake 8 installed without a hitch for me and I love it! I can see how you can get frustrated trying to troubleshoot an OS you are not familiar with. Sorry I can't add anything to help you out, but I just want to urge you to stick with it!

Because you're letting it get to you. You have to want to learn something new. If not, you'll
hate it.

Don't use Lilo, btw. Use GRUB.

Edit: Fixed formatting

Let's see if we can get lilo working first, then move onto installing other linux software that does the same thing as the software we already have installed but has that super 13370 feature we cant live without! 😉

Heh, I should have said after you get it worked out... 🙂

Anywho here's my (old) lilo.conf file:

-
boot=/dev/hda
root=/dev/hdb1
install=/boot/boot.b
map=/boot/map
vga=normal
delay=20
image=/vmlinuz
label=Linux
read-only
other=/dev/hda1
label=windows
table=/dev/hda
-

My Debian installation is on hdb1. You'd change that my editing the line
"root=/dev/hdb1".

"boot=/dev/hda" is the drive that it's installed on. 99% of the time, that's where
you'd want it. Make sure your partiton is bootable too.

Edit: Formatting on the lilo.conf file sucks. Stupid HTML not being allowed.

And then /sbin/lilo
if it is /sbin, linux user please confirm 🙂

I seem to know enough about linux... Why dont I use it?

According to some of the "What Linux do you use?" questions on different
forums, you do...

BSD seems to be one of the more popular linuxes.... 😉

Thank you very much. Everything looks much nicer now.

What I can say is: Linux is not/still not for everyone or everything.
I don't know whether it will ever be or not. Don't use it if you don't like it.

For a newbie, I would recommend re-installing Mandrake 8 using the 'recommended' settings. Also, do not use individual package selection. You can always install/uninstall RPM's after things are setup. That is about the only way I have gotten an error free installation.

Don't get discouraged, this is new. I remember when I used Win95 for my first time and didn't even know what a driver was. It's the same thing with Linux, only a little steeper of a learning curve.

Almost a straight quote off of tucow's bsd site 😀 I only use linux when I have to. BSD just makes more sense

This is why I recommend slack to newbies (will start recommending rolling your own distro soon 😉). I learned to use linux on slack. You learn the internals so little problems dont cause as much panic. If you start out with some gui holding your hand and wiping your butt you will have problems that you cant solve through the gui and you will just say f*ck it! and give up.

Ok, ok, you guys are motivating me again. Maybe I'll try a reinstall in a few days (or go for Slackware, many people have recommended that to me as well)
