its just that time. I've been here almost 3 years and well im just not appreciated.

I got a flat this morning.....popped on the donut and got to work about an hour late. and I really busted my ass getting the damn tire off, plus the jack kept sinking into the grass and wouldn't go up.

I got bitched out b/c they were calling my cell phone b/c of a conference call I was supposed to be on. so I said how was I going to be on the call while im changing my tire? and they wanted me to stop changing it and sit in my car for the call. meanwhile I was probably the most unimportant person that needed to be on the call.

then to top it all off I got grease on my pants, and they're bitching that im not dressed appropriately for work. clients never come into the office, and I sit in the back. no reason for this.....

now they want me to fix something on the network b/c our IT guy is out and they know I know quite a bit about this stuff. I have no certs or anything, just self educated.
and they IT guy said he fixed it last Friday.....well guess what.....he didn't. and he makes quite a bit more than I do. and his position isn't negotiable since its a friend of the owner.

I just want out. computers, networking, server maintenance, etc are all my passion. so how does one get started? I found a job on craigslist, here: http://newyork.craigslist.org/lgi/sad/191810817.html

less money than I get now, but I just want to know where do I go to get certified and what do I get certified in? and can it be done during after work hours?

all I want is to get paid for what I enjoy.........

You'll have to be fairly short to get into computers. A good balance is if you can find a large server case and maybe take out some of the components. Once removed, there may be enough room to squeeze into it.

Getting OUT of computers can be more tricky as the case usually unscrews from the outside.

Well you can either A) go back to school or B) get an in demand Certification.

For B) I would go with CCNA. It's not an easy certification to get though, but that's why it's in demand. BTW, the company I used to work for had 4 Network admins who took this test on the companies dime every year and failed it misserably every year. If they can get jobs without it :)

Seriously though thats about the only certification that I have really seen people looking for. (well A+ certification if you want to be a helpdesk slave)

If your guys can't pass the CCNA then they need to be fired. There is a reason that the high schools and community colleges all have CCNA classes - it's a fairly easy, entry-level cert. It's basically worthless by itself. If you are going to lean heavily on your certs you at least need some sort of a more advanced cert like MCSE or CCNP.

Funny thing is I was wondering what else I could do besides computers yesterday...

Was discussing it with the fiancee and concluded that there really isn't much else I can do without going back to school :(

Wow seems like a blog for unusedtalent.com. I guess your boss is just an asshat who doesn't care. I would understand if you worked there less than a year or were always tardy.

we'll be waiting for your "I want out of IT" post in about 6 months because you won't be enjoying it when you have to do it for a living. there's a pretty high percentage of people on this forum that work IT and want out with a passion.

They all passed the MCSE easily.... I have always heard that the CCNA is a pain.

For future reference, put a piece of plywood or a 2x4 in your trunk for the jack.

Yeah it sucks you fell for that. Seems like a shady place, like those work-from-home commericals or where you "make money for playing games". You could've gotten certs (I'm not in IT, but there is value to some certs) for much less money and time. The easier ones have cram session classes or even just books. I'd imagine the more difficult ones could be done with a 6 week course or so.

I'm up to about $18k in student loans from three years of university, and most of my income was through loans and scholarships. So with a little more loan $ you could've had a 2 or 4yr degree instead of a single useless cert.

Isn't that the truth? Dealing with computers mostly means dealing with people that are total idiots trying to get them to do obvious stuff, and it gets to be like scratching fingernails down a chalkboard.

I'd love to open my own business that has nothing to do with computers, but I'm too chickensh!t to do it. :(

Next time your cell keeps ringing while you're changing a tire, use it as an integral part of the jack assembly.
